Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Takes Surprising Cues From Last Year’s Most Controversial Manga

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is the follow-up to Gege Akutami’s popular series, Jujutsu Kaisen, and picks up the story with new characters and a new storyline. The very first chapter shows that this series will be quite different from what came before. While the original focused on how human emotions create Cursed Energy – the source of power for sorcerers and cursed spirits – Modulo introduces a new element: an alien race called the Simurians, indicating a significant change in direction for the series.

Later in the story, it might be revealed that Cursed Energy actually comes from aliens, much like how *Naruto* eventually explained that Chakra originated with the Otsutsuki clan. This twist would likely be divisive, but the story’s focus on humans and aliens living together could cause even more discussion. This idea is similar to Kuraku Ichikawa’s popular manga *Drama Queen*, which gained a lot of attention last year on Manga Plus because of its controversial subject matter.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Slightly Echoes Manga Plus’ Controversial Hit From Last Year

At the end of each year, Manga Plus by Shueisha showcases its most successful manga in different areas. One popular ranking is for “Top New Manga.” Although *Ichi the Witch* from Shonen Jump was initially number one, *Drama Queen*, which launched on December 1, 2024, quickly took the lead with about 500,000 views. It won by a significant amount. This ranking is based on how many views a new manga’s first chapter receives.

The manga *Drama Queen* caused a lot of discussion not because of its artistic merit, but due to its controversial storyline. The story is set on Earth, where humans and aliens live together after aliens saved the planet from a meteor. However, the aliens’ heroic status creates tension and prejudice among humans, which is central to the plot. The main characters, Seiran Kitami and Nomamoto, are openly biased against the aliens and actively try to harm them. The controversy is further heightened by the fact that Nomamoto, one of the main characters, develops a disturbing habit of consuming aliens.

Although *Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo* hasn’t gone as far as *Drama Queen*, it shares a similar focus on the relationship between humans and the alien Simurians. The alien character, Maru, who joins the Okkotsu siblings, is trying to find out if humans and Simurians can live together peacefully. Recent developments suggest Maru isn’t malicious, but conflict still seems likely. The story heavily hints that a war between the two groups is unavoidable, and because the Simurians are more powerful, the potentially divisive themes of *Drama Queen* could very well be reflected in *Modulo*.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Might Adopt Drama Queen‘s Controversial Plot After All

I watched as Maru joined Yuka and Tsurugi on their first mission, and he quickly made it clear he wasn’t just along for the ride. He’s really focused on figuring out if his people and humans can actually live together peacefully. But things took a serious turn when the villain of this chapter revealed the alien invasion is a ‘special grade’ incident – the same level as the attack by Ryomen Sukuna. That suggests Maru’s race is incredibly powerful, maybe even more so than Sukuna. What’s really worrying, though, is that sorcerers aren’t what they used to be. They aren’t nearly as strong as they were in the days of Gojo Satoru and Yuji Itadori, meaning this generation is facing a huge challenge.

Maru’s journey focuses on finding a way for everyone to live together, and his realization that sorcerers aren’t as powerful as the Simurians could significantly change who holds the power. This could put humans at risk of being controlled, with the Simurians becoming the ruling force – a situation similar to the themes explored in *Drama Queen*. Alternatively, like in *Drama Queen*, Maru himself might remain a good character, but the main villains of the story could actually be Simurians.

With *Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo* planned as a short, three-volume series, the Simurians appear to be the main villains, and we probably won’t see any other major antagonists introduced. It’s possible Maru will eventually help the sorcerers, putting him in conflict with his own people – a storyline similar to what recently happened in *Drama Queen*, where an alien ally switched sides to help the heroes. Currently, the direction of *Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo* is unclear, and it hasn’t yet demonstrated the same potential as the original series.
