Silent Hill f Endings & Story Explained

The following contains spoilers for Silent Hill f

Silent Hill f offers a powerfully emotional and often difficult exploration of growing up, leading to five different endings. Like other popular Silent Hill games, the story’s conclusion in Silent Hill f varies significantly based on the player’s choices throughout the game.

Silent Hill f goes beyond simply encouraging replayability; it centers the impact of Hinako’s changing relationships on the game’s core message about morality. Here’s a guide to unlocking all five endings in Silent Hill f and what each one reveals about the story.

Silent Hill f’s Is About A Woman’s Responsibility To Society and Herself

Shifting the familiar American setting to 1960s Japan, *Silent Hill f* explores the anxieties women face within societal expectations, using classic horror elements to tell its story. When Hinako and her friends become trapped by a mysterious, cursed mist in Ebisugaoka, Hinako begins to travel between the real world and a terrifying place called the Dark Shrine. There, she encounters a figure known as Fox Mask, who leads her through disturbing rituals with the goal of turning her into his ideal wife.

The story unfolds through clues discovered around town and in Hinako’s diary, gradually revealing its main idea. Hinako is an outcast because she chooses to be independent and befriends a man named Shu, defying the town’s traditions. Her parents view her as a disappointment, and she’s expected to enter an arranged marriage to resolve her father’s debts. This is sharply contrasted with her sister Junko, who seems to be the perfect candidate for marriage to a man we haven’t met. The story follows Hinako’s struggle to break free from the expectations and criticisms of everyone around her.

Throughout the game, Hinako is forced to fight monstrous versions of her friends and family, which are physical representations of their hidden resentments and hatred towards her. As the story unfolds, Hinako finds herself increasingly drawn to the mysterious Fox Mask. It’s gradually revealed that the Fox Mask is actually Kotoyuki, a classmate Hinako once saved from a fox when they were children.

The boy wasn’t who he seemed – he was actually controlled by a powerful fox spirit, becoming the character players know as Fox Mask. As Hinako fell further under Fox Mask’s influence, she began to split into two distinct personalities. One side of her manifested as the terrifying Shiromuku, a mist monster that had been tormenting the player. This monstrous form wanted to eliminate the part of Hinako resisting her destiny – becoming a submissive wife to the one she loved and fully embracing her new role.

This is a disturbing reimagining of the typical coming-of-age story. It culminates in a showdown between the two main characters after Hinako, a human, overcomes monstrous versions of her parents. However, the story takes a dark turn when Shiromuku kills Hinako’s human parents. From this point on, *Silent Hill f* offers multiple endings, influenced by player choices like how many times they’ve played, how they solve puzzles, and which items they collect.

The Darkest Ending Of Silent Hill f Is Unavoidable (At First)

“Coming Home to Roost” is the first ending players will unlock in *Silent Hill f*. It’s also the only one available during your initial playthrough. No matter how you play the game, you’ll get this ending first, and you’ll need to start a New Game+ to see the other possible endings.

Hinako discovers the mist monster terrorizing the town is actually another version of herself, the Shiromuku. This revelation leads to a final showdown within the Dark Shrine. Though she defeats her other self, Hinako finds she can’t escape the Dark Shrine, trapped in a repeating cycle of anguish with the Shiromuku.

The strange sounds die away, replaced by police sirens, signaling to the player that everything they’ve experienced with Hinako was a figment of her imagination. The truth, revealed in a police report, is that a 22-year-old woman – presumably the real Hinako – suffered a psychotic break at her wedding, resulting in a terrible tragedy. This mental breakdown was caused by the herbal medicine she was taking.

The capsules are revealed to be the same ones Shu gave Hinako for her headaches during the game, and they function as a standard healing item. This detail hints to the player that these capsules are significant and will likely affect the game’s ending in subsequent playthroughs. The ending they lead to presents a dark future for Hinako, where her only escape from a rejecting society is to violently retaliate against those who have wronged her.

Silent Hill f Is A Tragic Romance (If You Let It Be)

Once players finish the game and unlock “Coming Home to Roost,” they can start a New Game+ and experience *Silent Hill f* again. This new mode includes four different endings to unlock, and “Fox’s Wedding” is particularly intriguing and disturbing. To access it, players need to complete several difficult tasks during their playthrough, such as finding and purifying the Sacred Sword, collecting all the Agura no Hotei-sama figures, and solving the Crimson Water puzzle. It’s essential to purify the sword to unlock this ending. Additionally, players must complete the game without Hinako ever using a Red Capsule – a challenging restriction, as these capsules are usually a reliable way to quickly restore her health.

Here, Fox Mask steps in when the two Hinakos clash. In this outcome, the fox-like Hinako truly loves Fox Mask, and while she’s still unsure about her wedding and future, she finds peace with this path. This leads Shu to explain the real purpose of the medicine he’d been giving her – to make her face her true self. His wish to keep her by his side as a partner ultimately turns him into the final boss of this storyline, transforming him into a powerful Tsukumogami.

Once you beat the game, the final cutscene adds a disturbing new dimension to Hinako’s story. She’s treated like a possession rather than a person, with Fox Mask and Shu sharing a moment of unsettling agreement over ‘respectfully’ seeing her as Fox Mask’s bride. This ending fully transforms Hinako into the Shiromaku, and she appears to remain trapped in the Dark Shrine. A short scene after the credits shows her abandoned human face, left crying at the base of the Fox’s home. This represents her lost identity and her fear of becoming like her mother – simply someone’s wife. What could have been a love story is instead deeply upsetting and tragic.

Silent Hill f’s Fox Fight Leads To An Open-Ended Future

Unlike “The Fox Wedding,” “The Fox Wets Its Tail” shows what happens when Hinako manages to escape the Dark Shrine and the Fox Mask. To get this ending, players need to avoid using any Red Capsules to improve their health or sanity. They also have to find the Sacred Sword, but importantly, they shouldn’t purify it. The sword should be used primarily as a weapon in battles, rather than focusing on its role in the story.

When Hinako avoids a ruined shrine and doesn’t receive a blessing for her weapon, she bravely faces the supernatural and earns an opportunity to battle the Shiromaku. However, Fox Mask steps in when Hinako starts to win, scolding her for her defiance. With Shu’s support, Hinako challenges Fox Mask, ultimately forcing him to reveal his true identity as a powerful kitsune demon.

The fight against Fox Mask marks the end of the “The Fox Wets Its Tail” storyline. During the battle, he fully embraces his controlling nature and reveals the history of his obsession with Hinako, stemming from when she helped the boy who now possesses him during their childhood. Ultimately, Hinako wins. Though defeated, Fox Mask remains defiant but lets her and Shu leave the Dark Shrine. This ending offers a relatively cheerful resolution – Hinako and Shu return to Ebisugaoka as the mysterious mist begins to dissipate – but Hinako’s future remains uncertain.

Silent Hill f’s Hardest Ending Is Also The Most Satisfying

Unlocking the “Ebisugaoka in Silence” ending in *Silent Hill f* is challenging. First, you need to have already seen two other endings. Then, you must complete the game without using any Red Capsules, and you’ll need to find and purify the Sacred Sword. A key step is locating the hidden Ancient Jizo Statue, which is easiest to find while traveling from Shu’s house back to Hinako’s home, but requires a thorough search. Finding the statue comes at a cost: you must leave Hinako’s Brooch at an altar as an offering. This prevents you from opening any of Inari-sama’s boxes or doors for the remainder of the game.

The ‘Ebisugaoka in Silence’ ending feels like the most satisfying conclusion to the game. It features a conflict between Hinako’s two sides, with the Fox Mask character stepping in to explain that he and his people had been watching Hinako, recognizing her powerful potential. After defeating Fox Mask, his ancestor appears as the final boss, revealing a long-held plan to sacrifice Hinako to their tribe – a fate hinted at by earlier clues about missing women who were previous victims. Once the boss is defeated, both versions of Hinako find peace and connect with each other. The ending suggests that Hinako and Kotoyuki (the man behind the Fox Mask) will pursue a relationship, but only after they’ve both had time to live their own lives.

This is the most satisfying conclusion to *Silent Hill f*, and the closest the game gets to a genuinely happy ending. Hinako’s two sides are reconciled, giving her control over her own destiny and leaving the door open for a real relationship with Kotoyuki. Unlike the other endings, this one allows Hinako to fully maintain her independence and sense of self. In the end, Hinako finds peace only when both aspects of her personality agree on a hopeful future.

A New Chapter In Silent Hill’s Silliest Running Gag

The *Silent Hill* series is known for being genuinely frightening, but it also consistently includes surprisingly lighthearted and quirky endings. These endings offer a welcome break after the intense and disturbing experiences throughout the games. *Silent Hill f* continues this tradition, building on the strange dynamic between Shu and Hinako and making it the focus of a comical final reveal.

Players can unlock the “UFO” ending in Silent Hill f by playing in New Game+ mode. Early in the game, while exploring the town of Ebisugaoka and avoiding enemies, Hinako can discover a scrap metal archway next to a dumpster. Passing through this archway leads to a small room where a radio report announces the collapse of Magogawa Bridge. The game continues normally until you return to town and need to find three posters around Ebisugaoka. After that, go back to the area near the general store and find a UFO toy. Picking up both the toy and the document next to it will trigger the “UFO” ending. While it takes several steps, you can complete it in a few hours of gameplay.

The story ends with a lighthearted, retro manga-style scene where Hinako and her friends talk about a ridiculous alien plan to replace people. They try to figure out who among them might actually *be* an alien, but their alien-detecting robot, Roboko, is out of battery. To prove they’re human, they start sharing embarrassing secrets, which leads to Shu accidentally revealing some awkward memories about the girls growing up. This, understandably, results in them giving him a well-deserved beating! It’s a silly way to wrap things up, but even in this final, quirky ending of *Silent Hill f*, Hinako gets a small moment to take charge.
