If you enjoy mystery thrillers, you can now watch Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue on BBC iPlayer.
The series is coming to BBC One with new episodes that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It begins with a plane crash in the Mexican jungle, where nine out of ten passengers miraculously survive.
Surviving a plane crash is hard enough when supplies are running low, but things get even worse when survivors start mysteriously dying, suggesting someone is deliberately trying to kill them.
This series is created by author and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz, and stars Eric McCormack alongside Siobhan McSweeney (known from Derry Girls), David Ajala (Star Trek: Discovery), and other talented actors.
But where was the series filmed? Read on to find out more.
Where was Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue filmed?

Despite the show’s title suggesting it was filmed in Mexico, that’s not the case. The Mexican jungle setting was actually recreated in the Canary Islands, specifically on Gran Canaria, where all the filming for Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue happened.
Beyond the main storyline, the show beautifully showcases the breathtaking scenery of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago just off the coast of Africa.
The series was filmed in 2024. Actress McSweeney described the experience in Gran Canaria to the BBC, saying it was incredible. The production team built a massive jungle set with impressive studios, and by the end of filming, it felt like a thriving, self-contained ecosystem – almost like a miniature version of the creation of the universe. She praised their work as extraordinary.
McSweeney also shared what drew him to the show, explaining it was a great opportunity because he enjoys the genre and is a fan of Anthony Horowitz’s previous work. Plus, he was excited about filming in a warmer location like Gran Canaria.
I approached the scripts as a viewer, and I was completely captivated from beginning to end. The story had so many surprising twists and intriguing mysteries. Plus, instead of filming in my usual location of Northern Ireland, we got to shoot in the Canary Islands for the summer, which was a really exciting change of pace.
Eric McCormack explained to US Weekly that the Canary Islands location wasn’t a natural jungle. Because the island is volcanic, they mostly filmed on a very advanced studio set, but it was so well done that it didn’t feel artificial. They essentially built a fantastic jungle environment for the show.
It didn’t take long for the set to feel like a world of its own. We started noticing bugs appearing naturally, and I remember asking the props team if they’d brought them in, but they were just as surprised – the bugs were showing up on their own!
As we spent more and more time recording – six weeks just in the studio – it really started to feel like we were isolated together, far from everything. We fell into the feeling of being completely cut off, except every evening at six, we’d break for Spanish food.
Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue premieres on BBC One and iPlayer from Saturday 27th September.
