Frodo Baggins is remembered as the hero of *The Lord of the Rings*, but at the story’s conclusion, he leaves Middle-earth. Both the books by J.R.R. Tolkien and Peter Jackson’s films show him sailing to the Undying Lands (Valinor) with Bilbo, Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond. This happens even though his close friends, like Samwise Gamgee, Merry, and Pippin, all choose to stay and build their lives in the Shire.
The Undying Lands are a realm reserved for immortals, but Bilbo and Frodo were allowed to travel there because they carried the One Ring. This provided a meaningful end to their incredible adventures. However, since the other Hobbits stayed in Middle-earth and returned to the Shire, why did Frodo feel he couldn’t do the same?
Frodo Left Middle-earth To Heal After Return of the King

Frodo’s choice to leave Middle-earth was partly due to injuries he suffered during his quest to destroy the Ring – wounds that no human could ever fully recover from. He was particularly affected by a stab wound to the shoulder, inflicted by the Witch-King with a cursed blade. This blade was designed to stay lodged in the victim, slowly turning them into a wraith and drawing them into the realm of the undead, making complete healing impossible.
After being poisoned by Shelob, the massive spider (who I really don’t like thinking about), Frodo recovered, but the effects lingered. Every year, on the anniversary of the attack by the Ringwraiths on Weathertop, his shoulder would ache, and on the anniversary of his encounter with Shelob, he would become sick.
He traveled to the Undying Lands hoping to find healing that wasn’t possible in Middle-earth, believing the land’s purity could mend the wounds left by the lingering darkness he was escaping. This wasn’t just physical healing, but also for his mind and spirit, as his journey had deeply traumatized him. He had endured countless horrors, completed an immense task, and witnessed death, all while struggling with the weight and allure of the One Ring.
The situation was made even more difficult in the books when the Hobbits discovered their home, the Shire, had been taken over by Saruman after their return, forcing them to fight him – a storyline that wasn’t included in the films. Because of all this, the Undying Lands offered Frodo the lasting peace he desperately needed.
Tolkien Never Revealed Much Of Frodo’s Life After The Lord of the Rings

Frodo found peace in the Undying Lands, though Tolkien didn’t share many details about his life there – likely because it was calm and uneventful. Tolkien did describe it as a time for quiet thought and tranquility.
Sam, having also carried the Ring, was likely permitted to travel to the Undying Lands after his wife passed away many years later. While life in Valinor wouldn’t have granted Hobbits true immortality, it’s safe to assume both he and Frodo spent the rest of their lives there in peace and contentment.
All three Lord of the Rings movies are available to stream now on HBO Max.
