Star Wars Makes “Baby Yoda” Official Before The Mandalorian & Grogu (& Tries To End the Debate About It)

With the upcoming release of *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, Star Wars is once again discussing what to call the adorable character often known as Baby Yoda. The move from Disney+ to movie theaters is a big deal – it’s the first Star Wars film since 2019 and the first show from the streaming era to become a major cinematic event. It also shows just how beloved Grogu has become. Few characters since Disney acquired Lucasfilm have captured the public’s imagination quite like ‘The Child,’ and he’s now a central figure in the Star Wars universe, both now and in the future.

When the character now known as Grogu first appeared in *The Mandalorian*, Disney initially called him “The Child,” but fans quickly nicknamed him “Baby Yoda” – a name that stuck due to his resemblance to Yoda. Even after his real name, Grogu, was revealed in Season 2, most people continued to call him “Baby Yoda,” and even official *Star Wars* materials now use the nickname. For the first time, “Baby Yoda” appears on-screen as an official name in *LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past*.

The heroes are stunned when they meet Grogu, excitedly calling him “Baby Yoda” over and over. Lando Calrissian, dressed as a Mandalorian, arrives to gently correct them, explaining that the child’s name is actually Grogu. But will everyone remember it, or will “Baby Yoda” be the nickname that sticks?

Star Wars Does Need Grogu To Stick Over Baby Yoda

The new LEGO Star Wars sets featuring ‘Baby Yoda’ seem to acknowledge that nickname is here to stay, and they’re clearly trying to capitalize on its popularity – it *is* a funny association. However, these sets also reinforce the character’s actual name, Grogu, and suggest Lucasfilm and Disney should promote it more. Since Grogu is a central figure in Star Wars’ return to the big screen, it’s important that name becomes instantly recognizable and beloved by fans.

The impact extends far beyond a single film. If this proves successful, we can expect sequels and potentially spin-off shows. Grogu is already a popular item in stores, and that popularity will likely increase. It’s easy to envision more films and short episodes on Disney+ featuring the character. He’s poised to become a central figure in the Star Wars universe, and it’s much simpler to build a brand around the name ‘Grogu’ than to keep calling him ‘Baby Yoda’.

Beyond the immediate story, there’s the question of how long ‘The Child’ will remain a baby. If Lucasfilm plans to continue telling stories with him over many years, he’ll inevitably grow up on screen. Since ‘Baby Yoda’ can’t stay a baby forever, and eventually won’t be recognizable as simply ‘Yoda,’ giving him the name Grogu is crucial for the future. We can expect to see the name Grogu used more and more as marketing for *The Mandalorian and Grogu* increases.

Fans can see The Mandalorian and Grogu on the big screen starting May 22, 2026. Meanwhile, you can stream the first three seasons of The Mandalorian, along with *LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past*, on Disney+.
