It’s much easier to start watching something on a streaming service than it is to use a traditional cable box. While finding something to watch on a streaming platform can sometimes be difficult, it’s still preferable to flipping through hundreds of cable channels. However, streaming services like Prime Video and HBO Max are facing challenges, especially when it comes to keeping TV shows on the air. Having a dedicated audience isn’t enough anymore – it’s incredibly difficult for shows to succeed in the streaming world.
Netflix has a reputation for cancelling shows, even popular ones, and it seems they’re particularly quick to do so within the fantasy genre. Here are five fantasy series that were surprisingly cancelled by Netflix after only a short time.
5) Warrior Nun
I’ve always loved seeing books turned into shows on Netflix, but they don’t often try comics, which is a shame. So, I was really excited when they decided to take a chance on Ben Dunn’s *Warrior Nun Areala*, bringing Simon Berry on board to make it happen. Everything just seemed to click, and after that first season, it really felt like Netflix had struck gold with a potential blockbuster!
Despite a compelling second season of *Warrior Nun* that followed Ava Silva’s journey as a new member of a secret order fighting demons, Netflix cancelled the show. Plans for a trilogy of movies to finish the story were unfortunately never put into production.
4) Shadow and Bone
Eric Heisserer recognized the promise of Leigh Bardugo’s *Shadow and Bone* books and successfully adapted them into a captivating series. Netflix assembled a talented cast, featuring actors like Ben Barnes and Jessica Mei Li. The first season of *Shadow and Bone* was a hit, and it went beyond simply retelling the books by introducing its own unique story, hinting at a much larger world to explore.
The second season of the show continued the story immediately after the first season’s finale. Sadly, it was cancelled soon after, even though the season ended with a major cliffhanger. Despite fan efforts to renew the show, including a dedicated online campaign, Shadow and Bone couldn’t be saved.
3) Kaos
Jeff Goldblum is on a roll – everything he seems to be involved with is a success! But even he couldn’t save Netflix’s new series, Kaos, from following a familiar pattern. The dark comedy centers around a group of people who find out they’re connected to the Greek gods.
Even though the show *Kaos* had a strange concept, critics generally liked it, and the first season ended with a cliffhanger that suggested future seasons were possible. Unfortunately, it was cancelled just a few months after it premiered, so those plans never materialized.
2) The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
Jim Henson is a legendary figure in fantasy, famous for bringing countless beloved creatures to life. One of his most impressive achievements was the 1982 film *The Dark Crystal*, set on a strange planet ruled by the cruel Skeksis. The fate of the planet rested on the shoulders of two Gelflings, who ultimately succeeded in their quest to save it.
Years after the original film, Netflix created a prequel called *The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance*. It captured the same enchanting feel as the first movie, and used updated technology to make the world of Thra look even more believable. Despite positive reviews, Netflix decided not to renew the show for another season.
1) Fate: The Winx Saga
For years, people had talked about making a live-action version of the popular cartoon *Winx Club*. The idea really started to take shape towards the end of the 2010s. *Fate: The Winx Saga* was designed to be a young adult drama like *The Vampire Diaries* and *Teen Wolf*, but it actually ended up being more developed, with richer characters and a more detailed magical world.
While many shows don’t get a second chance, *Fate: The Winx Saga* did – a second season aired in 2022. Unfortunately, it was cancelled soon after, ending the series on screen. However, the story lives on as a graphic novel, suggesting the show had a lot of potential.
