Why Bully 2 Never Happened, According to Rockstar Co-Founder

Dan Houser, a co-founder of Rockstar Games and writer for *Red Dead Redemption 2*, recently explained why *Bully 2* was never made. Rockstar is famous for huge franchises like *Grand Theft Auto* and *Red Dead*, but they’ve also created memorable standalone games like *Bully*. *Bully* was a unique open-world game where players controlled a troublemaking student navigating the social circles of a private school. Fans loved its fresh concept, which offered the same attention to detail and humor found in Rockstar’s other games, but in a different setting.

Around the late 2000s and early 2010s, rumors spread that Rockstar Games was developing *Bully 2*, even though the game was never officially confirmed. In 2009, the composer Shawn Lee mentioned he’d soon be working on the game’s music, implying it was past the planning stages. But the project never materialized. Instead, Rockstar released several other successful titles – *Red Dead Redemption*, *L.A. Noire*, *Max Payne 3*, and *Grand Theft Auto V* – before finally releasing *Red Dead Redemption 2* after a five-year wait.

Dan Houser Reveals Why Bully 2 Was Never Made

Considering the original *Bully* game is nearly 20 years old and key writers like Dan Houser have left Rockstar, the chances of *Bully 2* being made seem increasingly slim. In a recent interview with IGN, Houser explained the reason *Bully 2* never materialized was simply a lack of time and resources – a common challenge in game development.

According to Houser, the problem was likely limited resources. He explained that with a small team of leaders and creatives, it’s simply impossible to take on every project they’d like.

Over time, details about what *Bully 2* could have been have surfaced. Interestingly, some features originally intended for that game-like a more detailed open world and more realistic interactions with characters-ended up in *Red Dead Redemption 2*. After the success of *GTA 5*, Rockstar Games decided to concentrate all its efforts on *Red Dead Redemption 2*. While the company has multiple studios, they determined they could produce their best work by uniting the entire team on a single project.

It appears that’s why we never got a *Bully 2*. Rockstar shifted to focusing on one game at a time, and *Red Dead Redemption 2* simply made more sense as their next project. *Red Dead Redemption* was a bigger hit with critics and players, and it also offered a stronger base for an online experience, which Rockstar was probably aiming for after the success of *GTA Online*. While *Bully 2* might happen someday, it seems improbable. Rockstar is currently working on *GTA 6*, and it’s difficult to predict what they’ll create after that. A completely new game might be the best path forward, but we likely won’t know for many years.
