A new game is coming to PlayStation 5 in 2026, and it’s taking inspiration from a classic, yet often overlooked, role-playing game originally released on the PlayStation 1 by Square Enix. This game will also be available on PC, but won’t be released on other consoles like the Nintendo Switch or Xbox Series X.
A new PlayStation 5 game is bringing back the feel of classic PlayStation 1 titles, and it’s especially exciting news for fans of *Parasite Eve*. Called *Parasite Mutant*, the game is developed by IceSitruuna, the studio known for *Frontier Hunter: Erza’s Wheel of Fortune*.
About the Game
In *Parasite Mutant*, you take on the role of Psionic Agent Nova, sent to explore a deserted island city and uncover its secrets. She soon discovers a hidden conspiracy that will drastically alter her destiny.
Here’s the game’s core idea. The gameplay blends the fast-paced combat of classic 90s RPGs with a unique three-part chain system. Overall, it feels like a mix of action RPG and survival horror.
Parasite Eve Inspiration
The game draws heavy inspiration from *Parasite Eve*, a role-playing game originally created by Square in 1998. Square later merged with Enix to become Square Enix, and still owns the rights to *Parasite Eve*, though they haven’t developed any new games in the series recently. While Square Enix renewed the *Parasite Eve* trademark in 2018, suggesting a potential revival, nothing has come of it so far.
When it was first released, *Parasite Eve* received a score of 81 on Metacritic and has since become a beloved classic among PlayStation players. Interestingly, the game is based on a 1995 novel of the same name. It was followed by *Parasite Eve II* in 1999 and *The 3rd Birthday* in 2010. However, the series hasn’t seen a new installment in over 15 years, leaving fans eager for a continuation.
The trailer for *Parasite Mutant* shows it’s heavily influenced by *Parasite Eve*, even directly copying elements from it. It remains to be seen if the developer, IceSitruuna, can successfully execute this ambitious project. Their previous game, *Frontier Hunter: Erza’s Wheel of Fortune*, received mixed reviews despite being a Metroidvania, and *Parasite Mutant* appears to be a significant leap forward in scope and design.
