I really enjoy watching great horror films whenever Halloween rolls around, and I’ve also gotten into the habit of going to Universal’s Horror Nights for the last four years. It’s a lot of fun to be frightened and feel like a final girl, but I especially appreciate how the theme parks make you feel completely immersed in the worlds and stories that inspire their haunted houses – the sets and characters are always incredibly detailed. This year, I had the chance to visit the new Universal’s Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas, and I can honestly say it’s an even more terrifying version of the experience.
I was so thrilled to be invited by Universal to their Blood Red Carpet Celebration for the new attraction just a month after it opened! I, along with other members of the media, finally got to experience Horror Unleashed and see everything it had to offer. Now, I want to share my thoughts – how does it stack up against the regular, year-round Horror Nights? Here’s my breakdown.
Universal Horror Nights Is Scary, But Admittedly There’s Ways To Hide
I enjoy being frightened at the Horror Nights houses, but I’ll admit I still get scared – and I think that’s a good thing. I’ve been to around 40 to 50 haunted houses in my life, and usually I’m just laughing and having fun. However, sometimes real fear does creep in, either for me or for the friends I’m with, and when that happens, there are ways to handle it and get through the scares.
I’ve developed some strategies for navigating Horror Nights, whether for myself (I get easily scared!) or for friends who end up feeling the same way – and I often use them at Universal Studios. One trick is to subtly position myself behind other guests inside the haunted houses, making it less likely I’ll be singled out for a scare. Another is to find quicker routes to avoid the outdoor scare zones when I need a breather from the jump scares. And if things get too intense, I can always head to the Wizarding World, Super Mario World, or other regular rides that aren’t part of the horror event. However, those tactics won’t work at Horror Unleashed.

Universal Horror Unleashed Has A Different Model For Letting In Guests To Its Haunted Houses
Let me tell you, the times I – or someone I was with – genuinely felt scared are the memories that really stick with me after Horror Nights. That’s the great thing about it, really. You *know* you’re going to make it through, fear or no fear. It’s all about the show, the performance, and honestly, nobody’s actually going to get hurt. So you might as well embrace the experience and get your money’s worth, right? It’s the feeling of being scared that’s the fun part, not actual danger.
Let me tell you about Universal Horror Unleashed. As a huge horror fan, I immediately noticed they really thought about how to make this new, year-round event truly immersive. It’s clear the creators knew how easy it is to get pulled out of the experience, and they’ve worked to fix that. The biggest difference for me? There’s no more shuffling along in a big group through the houses like you often get at Halloween Horror Nights. They actually stagger when each group enters, which means you’re way less likely to be stuck hiding behind someone else!
In nearly every house I visited – except for one that seemed to have a temporary issue – my companion and I felt completely isolated from the other guests. This meant the scares primarily happened to one of us, and I experienced most of them.
I was initially worried when I first noticed this, but I actually ended up loving it. It allowed me to fully enjoy each house – which were themed around Universal Monsters, Scarecrow: The Reaping, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Exorcist: Believer. Because these houses were built to last for over a month at Las Vegas’s Area 15, they felt more realistic and lived-in. This made the longer experiences inside them even more immersive, and therefore, more frightening.

There’s Also A Couple Of Houses That Actually Corner You In A Room For Part Of It
If you’d prefer to experience Universal Horror Unleashed with no prior knowledge, a SPOILER ALERT is in effect for the following section. Feel free to jump ahead if you want to remain completely surprised.
Besides having more frights per person at Horror Unleashed, the show’s directors added something new called “Memorable Moments.” This involves the actors cornering you within a room of the haunted house, making you feel trapped and helpless as part of the experience.
This occurred during the Exorcist: Believer haunted house, when an actor playing a possessed person really seemed to become possessed right before my eyes. It also happened in what I thought was the scariest house of the night, Scarecrow: The Reaping, as I found myself trapped in a dusty field facing a frightening scarecrow. I’ve never experienced this level of immersion at a Horror Nights house before, and it was a really smart way to make things even more terrifying.

Being Able To Actually Interact To The Characters Walking Around Adds To The Horrors, Too
This brings me to what happens outside the haunted houses, which is truly remarkable. Horror Unleashed functions as a prop house and gathering place where all sorts of horror creatures appear at night. It’s beautifully designed and a really enjoyable place to be. It differs from the scare zones at Universal theme parks in that, instead of creatures simply jumping out to frighten you, you can often chat with them and learn about their histories and why they’re here. It’s a much more interactive experience, allowing you to get to know the characters. It’s a lot of fun!
For instance, I approached a man named Robert-he was wearing a ski mask and holding a knife-after spotting him around the bar. Learning about his background really made the creepy feeling of being drawn to him hit differently than just a series of quick scares throughout the night. (However, don’t worry, there are still plenty of those moments to be found outside the haunted houses). It strongly reminded me of Universal’s FanFest event earlier this year, which featured a similar experience in its Back To The Future area.
If you enjoy Universal Horror Nights as much as I do, you’ll likely find Horror Unleashed to be an improvement. The only potential downside might be crowds on particularly busy days, but since it’s open all year, it probably won’t be as packed as a regular night at Horror Nights. Plus, Horror Unleashed features a vibrant Las Vegas-style show with dancers and even a sword swallower, and you can also grab drinks and food while you’re there.
I’m really glad this exists, and I’m excited to learn more about the upcoming event in Chicago as well. If my review has gotten you interested, you can find ticket information and purchase options on the Universal Horror Unleashed website.
