PlayStation: The First 30 Years is a comprehensive and visually stunning look back at Sony’s groundbreaking video game console, celebrating its 30th anniversary. It features unique access to Sony’s archives, including research and development prototypes, initial concept drawings, and early development models. Spanning 400 large pages, the book presents consoles, controllers, and design ideas never seen before-from experimental, unreleased prototypes to the polished designs of the PlayStation consoles, all the way up to the PlayStation 5.
Accompanying these impressive visuals are perspectives from the people who created the look and feel of PlayStation, such as Ken Kutaragi, Teiyu Goto, and Yujin Morisawa. They share the thinking behind the design and technology of some of gaming’s most memorable consoles. PlayStation: The First 30 Years comes in a Standard Edition and a Deluxe Edition, with the Deluxe Edition limited to 1,994 copies. The Deluxe Edition includes a visible spine, a special presentation box, and unique prints. This book is a must-have tribute to 30 years of groundbreaking design and its influence on popular culture. It’s an essential celebration of three decades of innovation.
Photographer Benedict Redgrove, known for his acclaimed 2019 book NASA: Past and Present Dreams of the Future, was selected to capture the beautiful images for this book. His work brings the visuals to life.
PlayStation: The First 30 Years features art direction by Michael C. Place and design by Nicole Motby, both working at Studio.Build. Place is well-known for designing the memorable packaging for the original PlayStation game WipEout, and he continued this work with its follow-ups, WipEout 2097 and WipEout 3.
This publication was created with close partnership from PlayStation and is only available on Read-Only Memory.
