New Halloween Has a Controversial New Take on Michael Myers (And It’s Been Retconned Before)

A potentially divisive element from Michael Myers’ backstory will be revisited in a new Halloween installment. Michael Myers is a remarkably simple, yet deeply frightening character – the classic example of a slasher villain. He’s typically shown with kitchen knives, ordinary clothes (aside from his iconic mask), and he pursues victims calmly, rarely running. All of these core traits will be maintained in a new Halloween video game coming out next year, but the developers are also making some bold creative choices to adapt him for gameplay.

Whether Michael Myers is supernatural in the Halloween movies has been a long-running discussion. This has largely been left up to viewers to decide across the different films, as he consistently seems to break the boundaries of what a human body can endure. He survives being shot multiple times, stabbed, burned, and falls from dangerous heights with little to no lasting effect. By the end of Halloween Kills, he’s brutally attacked by a crowd, shot, and stabbed, but still manages to get back up and continue killing. However, Halloween Ends seemingly brought a final conclusion to Michael’s story, as he is ultimately killed and completely destroyed by an industrial machine.

New Halloween Game Makes Michael Myers Explicitly Supernatural

Even though Michael Myers is known for being incredibly durable, many fans find it more compelling when his powers remain mysterious and unsettling. This ambiguity helps maintain the feeling that he’s a truly terrifying, unexplainable force – a real boogeyman. However, a new video game from Illfonic called Halloween will portray Michael Myers as explicitly supernatural. In the game, players can choose to play as a civilian trying to avoid and escape Michael’s attacks, or they can take on the role of the infamous serial killer himself.

Players controlling Michael will have unique abilities to help them outmaneuver opponents. The most prominent of these is called “Shape Jump,” which lets Michael become invisible and quickly move around the map. This ability represents how Michael can seemingly appear anywhere, always managing to be close behind other players, even though he’s usually seen moving slowly. It’s a smart way to allow Michael to navigate the map quickly, but it has also proven to be a bit controversial!

As we’ve discussed, Michael’s background has largely remained a mystery. However, there was one instance where the filmmakers tried to clearly explain his incredible durability. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers sparked debate among fans by revealing Michael’s origins: he was subjected to a curse as a child by a cult, which gave him supernatural powers that shield him from harm. His main purpose is to kill and sacrifice his family, which explains why he relentlessly pursues his sister, Laurie Strode. Anyone else who dies? They’re simply obstacles in his path.

Later movies, especially the newest Halloween trilogy, have moved away from the obvious supernatural parts of the story, or have completely left them out. In those films, Michael Myers is presented less as someone influenced by a cult’s magic and more as a direct embodiment of evil. However, the new Halloween video game seems to be showing Michael Myers as more supernatural than ever before.

Naturally, remember this is just a video game, and some changes are necessary to make it enjoyable and engaging. The new Halloween game seems to be very true to the original movies in terms of its feel and look. However, we’ll have to be patient, as it won’t be released until next fall.

Halloween is scheduled to come out on September 6th, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. What are your thoughts on Michael Myers having more supernatural abilities in this new game? Share your opinions in the comments below and join the discussion now in the ComicBook Forum!
