After Microsoft increased the price of Xbox consoles in certain regions, Sony adjusted its approach with the PlayStation 5. However, instead of raising prices, Sony has kept the PlayStation 5’s price the same.
I’ve noticed some changes to the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in Europe. While the price hasn’t gone up, it feels like you’re getting a little less for your money now, according to Eurogamer.
Sony has actually made the PS5 a bit more expensive, but not through a direct price increase. They’ve reduced the amount of storage you get with the console, meaning you’re getting less for your money. While it doesn’t look like a price hike on paper, it effectively functions as one.
YouTuber Austin Evans disassembled a newer version of the console to see what had changed. He found it has less storage space – only about 667.2GB is actually available for installing games – and uses a lighter fan. The internal motherboard has also been redesigned to be thinner.
The console is slightly lighter, which mainly helps reduce shipping costs. These changes likely save Sony money, but they aren’t offering those savings to customers.
Gotta protect those profit margins, right?!
Why do I even care? We focus on Xbox news on this site, and frankly, I’m already frustrated with Xbox because they’ve raised prices again.
Consoles are currently a poor value for the money. Both the Xbox Series X and Series S cost more now than when they first came out nearly five years ago. Sony has also increased the price of the PS5 in the United States, and in Europe, they’re now selling a PS5 Digital Edition with less storage at the same price as the standard model.
Typically, as consoles get older, their price goes down. However, current consoles are actually becoming *more* expensive, despite difficult economic times. This feels unfair and makes it hard to suggest that anyone purchase one right now.
Consoles have always been a good option for people who want to play games without spending a lot of money or dealing with the complexities of building a PC. However, even the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is quite expensive considering what it offers. They’re surprisingly pricey for the experience you get.
The current state of PC gaming is confusing. While powerful gaming PCs can cost a fortune, they don’t always have to. Stunning graphics are great, of course, but lately we’ve been focusing on them too much and losing sight of what’s truly important in gaming.
The Steam Deck is really taking off! I’ve actually been using it more often than my Xbox lately. It just goes to show that good graphics aren’t everything – a fun game is what really matters.
The Nintendo Switch showed us that handheld gaming is popular, and with so many handheld gaming PCs available now, I believe they’re a smarter buy than an Xbox or PlayStation 5. They offer incredible portability, and with services like Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere, you get a lot of value for your money.
It’s certainly where I’d be putting my money right now.
