How Nicole Kidman Handled Tom Cruise Divorce Before Keith Urban Split

People are deeply curious about what caused the separation between Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban.

Just after the news of their split became public, the Oscar-winning actress filed for divorce from the country music singer, citing “irreconcilable differences,” according to court documents obtained by NBC News.

Although fans are only now finding out about the breakup, TopMob News has learned that Kidman, 58, and Urban, 57, have been living separately since the start of summer-with the actress staying at their family home in Nashville with their daughters Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14, while the musician moved into his own place in the same city.

Neither star has spoken publicly about the split. However, TopMob News discovered that Kidman didn’t want the divorce and was initially trying to repair their marriage.

Just three months ago, Kidman celebrated her 19th wedding anniversary with Urban by posting a photo of them embracing on Instagram (Urban didn’t share a dedicated post, but did leave a heart emoji on hers). Interestingly, fans may remember she also acknowledged a significant anniversary with ex-husband Tom Cruise shortly before their divorce.

Kidman first met the action star while filming Days of Thunder in 1990, shortly after his divorce from his first wife, Mimi Rogers.

I was completely swept away by Tom. I would have done anything for him,” she shared with DeJour in 2012. “I was very spontaneous and inexperienced at the time.”

After falling deeply and passionately in love, they got married in December of that same year. For the next ten years, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise continued to work together, appearing in films like Far and Away and Eyes Wide Shut, and also built a life together, adopting daughter Bella Cruise, 32, and son Connor Cruise, 30. Despite facing challenges-including an ectopic pregnancy early in their marriage-the Rabbit Hole actress told the publication she “believed our life together was ideal.”

Fans were taken aback when the couple announced their separation in February 2001, followed shortly by Tom Cruise filing for divorce. According to Nicole Kidman, she was also completely surprised.

Court documents obtained by ABC News that May revealed, “This news was a shock to Nicole Kidman.” The papers continued, “On December 24th, they happily celebrated their 10-year anniversary with friends. Throughout the rest of December and afterward, they remained intimate; in fact, Nicole Kidman became pregnant with Tom Cruise’s child but unfortunately suffered a miscarriage.”

According to the documents, Kidman objected to Cruise’s plan to end their marriage. She asked him not to leave and instead suggested they try marriage counseling or find other ways to work through any issues they might have had, the outlet reported. However, Cruise maintained that his decision was firm and left their home.

According to documents he filed, the Mission: Impossible star stated that they had separated before their anniversary, as reported by ABC News. He also refuted the idea that the divorce came as a surprise to Kidman, with his lawyer explaining to the news source that she “has always known exactly why the parties are divorcing.”

Cruise didn’t believe it was anyone else’s concern.

In a 2002 interview with Barbara Walters, the Jerry Maguire actor said, “Anyone who’s been in a relationship knows that’s not how it goes down,” adding, “I think that it’s something that is between us.”

He also maintained that the divorce wasn’t related to their miscarriage or his well-known beliefs about Scientology.

No matter the cause, Kidman admitted that getting over it was difficult. She shared with DeJour, “It took me a really long time to recover,” and added, “It was a huge surprise and really affected me.”

While going through her divorce-which was completed a few months later-Kidman threw herself into her work, releasing Moulin Rouge! and The Others in 2001, followed by The Hours the next year.

“To be truly honest, I was trying to escape my own life back then,” she explained at the 2015 Women in the World summit. “I couldn’t cope with what was happening. But as an actor, you have the amazing ability to lose yourself in another person’s life and become someone else for a while.”

As she stepped into these different roles, she found she was changing herself too.

“Then I started to accept my own life and get things back on track,” she continued, “and it took quite a few years to do so.”

However, after winning the Oscar in 2003 for her leading performance in The Hours, Kidman came to a realization.

“That moment was a turning point, and I realized that wasn’t the answer,” she said. “I was at The Beverly Hills Hotel, surrounded by luxury, and I’ve never felt so alone in my life.”

Even after a difficult breakup with Cruise-who later married Katie Holmes in 2006 before divorcing in 2012-Kidman remained hopeful about finding love again. She eventually met Urban at a G’Day USA event in Los Angeles in 2005.

“I might be a little more cautious now, but I always try to stay as open as I can. I just believe in living life that way,” she explained to Harper’s Bazaar in 2021. “I can be careful, and I’ve definitely been hurt before, but I’d rather be warm and welcoming than closed off. My husband, Keith, says he asked me how my heart was when they first met, and I apparently replied, ‘Open.'”
