The Simpsons are returning to the big screen with a new movie, two decades after The Simpsons Movie first hit theaters. Many believe this is an ideal moment to wrap up the series. The Simpsons has enjoyed an incredibly successful run, becoming the longest-running animated show in the Western world and one of the longest-running TV shows of all time. Despite this, the show is continuing, with a recent renewal for four more seasons on Fox, meaning The Simpsons is now expected to reach Season 40.
The Simpsons Movie getting a sequel is happening at a key moment for the show. It’s been 20 years since the first film – something the series has jokingly referenced before – and it will be the first new release in a while for many longtime fans. Now is the perfect opportunity to create a truly memorable story that feels like a fitting end to a show that’s been on the air for 40 years.
The Simpsons Movie 2 Will Bring Back Lapsed Fans
Similar to how The Simpsons Movie did in 2007, The Simpsons Movie 2 is expected to re-engage longtime fans. While new episodes have continued to be released (with the current season airing now), many viewers have stopped watching regularly. Some stopped after the show’s earlier, highly-regarded seasons – often called the “Golden Era” – while others lost interest around seasons 20 or 30. Regardless, a significant number of fans will likely reconnect with The Simpsons through this new movie.
This will likely have both positive and negative consequences. It could create an unfair comparison for viewers who haven’t watched the show since the 1990s, leading them to dislike the new movie no matter how good it is. However, the film also provides a great chance to re-engage those who haven’t followed the show recently and introduce them to its current style. The Simpsons has changed a lot over the years, and each season has its own distinct feel, even though many of the same people have worked on it consistently.
The Simpsons is taking more risks with its storytelling now. Recent seasons have featured episodes that break away from the traditional sitcom structure, resulting in some truly original narratives. Back in Season 13’s episode, “Gump Roast,” the show jokingly predicted they’d have stories for years to come – and that prediction has proven remarkably accurate. A huge number of episodes have aired since then, and the series is now increasingly exploring new and different ways to tell stories with these well-known characters.
Considering all the new ideas being tested for the upcoming movie, it will demonstrate to long-time The Simpsons fans that the show has genuinely developed to stay relevant today, addressing their concerns about it changing too much. However, even with these improvements, one critical part of the show’s creation can’t continue indefinitely-just like the Simpsons family themselves. The voice actors deserve a satisfying conclusion before it’s too late.
The Simpsons Does Need to End…Somehow

I think what’s really amazing about The Simpsons, besides its longevity, is how the original voice cast has stuck with it for so long! It wasn’t until Season 36 that we had a big change – Pamela Hayden, who did the voice of Milhouse and others, retired. And honestly, it really hit me that the rest of the core cast probably won’t be far behind when they decide to retire too. It’s hard to think about, but they can’t do it forever, you know?
The Simpsons Movie 2 may not be the very last installment, but it will likely be the final major project for the original voice actors, giving them a fittingly large-scale story to conclude their work. After so many seasons, it’s difficult to imagine a truly satisfying ending for the show itself. The creators have suggested that the series will likely just conclude with a standard episode, like any other, and have even poked fun at the idea of a grand finale, implying it wouldn’t suit the show’s style.
The Simpsons creator Matt Groening has mentioned before that if a member of the voice cast passed away, it would probably mean the end of the show-a sobering thought for fans as the series approaches its 40th season. However, before that happens, a sequel to The Simpsons Movie could be a great way to showcase the current voice cast at their best and essentially mark the end of an era. Even if The Simpsons continues for many more seasons and episodes with a new cast, this film could serve as a fitting farewell to the original stars and crew.
It seems strange to be talking about this now, but I remember when The Simpsons Movie came out in 2007, it really felt like it could have been the end. They brought a lot of the original creative team back for that one, and the story was the most ambitious they’d done yet, putting the entire town of Springfield in danger. Now, 20 years later, they’re making another movie, and it feels like it needs to be even *bigger* than the first. If the story isn’t going to be more expansive, what will make it feel truly special and epic is if it feels like a genuine farewell-a goodbye that really needs to be experienced in a theater.
