Great news for fans! Walton Goggins, known for his role in the Amazon Fallout TV series, is joining Fallout 76. That’s right – the show and the game are crossing over in a significant way!
Later this year, Goggins’s famous character, The Ghoul, will be added to the game. He’ll be hosting a brand-new bounty hunting feature, launching around the same time as season 2 of Fallout.
I’m so excited! They’re releasing a huge new update called Burning Springs, and it’s going to add bounty hunting to the game! Plus, they’re adding a whole new region to explore in the north-west part of the map. I can’t wait to check it all out!
As a longtime Fallout player, I’m really excited about the new Ohio region! The developers have said it’s heavily inspired by Fallout 3 and New Vegas, which is awesome. They wanted to make sure the feel of Ohio really matched the story and atmosphere we’re getting in Fallout season 2, and I think that’s a great idea. It sounds like it’ll fit right in!
A particularly interesting location in this new area is Highway Town. Here, you’ll meet The Ghoul, who’s involved in some questionable dealings at a bar named The Last Resort. He’s got a massive list of bounties that need completing, and you’re going to assist him in tracking them down.
If you’re participating in the Fallout 76 private test server, you can try out this exciting new feature starting October 2nd. Everyone else will need to wait until December 2025.
To learn all the details firsthand, TopMob Gaming went to New York City and spoke with two of the lead developers of Fallout 76 about this thrilling update. But the big question is: how did they manage to interview The Ghoul himself?

Fallout 76’s creative director, Jonathan Rush, explained to us: “It really developed naturally. With the addition of the new region, we were trying to decide on the main feature for the update. We wanted something that both fit the atmosphere of the new area and addressed what players had been telling us, and that’s how bounty hunting came about, right?”
So, who could be a more perfect host for a bounty hunting feature than Walton Goggins? Especially as The Ghoul. Honestly, you couldn’t ask for a better fit. Given that Walton Goggins is a huge Fallout fan and loves the games, it was a natural choice to include this character in the update.
We were really happy to finish the script. We had some writers working with us and one writer from the show itself, and they all worked together to make it really strong. Then, of course, everything came together when Walton Goggins got it as a base, and he then shaped it into his own version of The Ghoul.
So, what was it like witnessing Goggins perform as The Ghoul in the recording booth? “It was incredible,” Rush shared. “Watching him record those lines was amazing. I was truly astonished by how quickly he could become The Ghoul – it wasn’t Walton Goggins anymore, it was The Ghoul. For me, that was simply magical.”
We played through the game and spoke to The Ghoul, trying to find out why he came to Appalachia. After questioning him, he hinted at following a reward that led him here, but he didn’t explain the specifics.

“We don’t delve into the reasons for his presence,” Rush explained. “He just *is* The Ghoul, acting as you’d anticipate. He’s The Ghoul, engaged in activities befitting The Ghoul – specifically, bounty hunting.”
So, pushing things further with this particular update didn’t feel completely essential. It’s not that we won’t learn more in the future – or maybe we won’t. But I think that’s part of what makes The Ghoul so captivating – it’s the element of mystery.
After spending a few hours playing with the latest update, we found the bounty system centered around The Ghoul to be both fun and easy to use. It was a genuinely enjoyable experience.
The Ghoul offers two kinds of bounties: smaller ‘grunt hunts’ that you can complete solo, and larger ‘head hunts’ that are more like raid encounters. These ‘head hunts’ are designed for groups, allowing you to team up with other online players to defeat a stronger enemy together.
I have to say, both of these bounty types were seriously funny to play! The first grunt hunt was hilarious – it was just this scientist wandering around, and it honestly felt like something straight out of Fallout season 1. He didn’t even put up much of a fight! It was pretty comical watching our super-powered, level 300 characters take him on – the contrast was just amazing.
We once faced a particularly memorable challenge: tracking down a very influential older woman who wore highly advanced power armor. It proved quite difficult, even with a team of players all at level 300. It says a lot that whenever a hunt for her began, I instantly wanted to stop everything else and participate – it was just that exciting. This was a truly unique situation. The challenge was immense, and everyone wanted to be involved.
As a long-time Fallout fan, I gotta say, The Ghoul totally fits into the world of Fallout 76. It makes perfect sense he’d still be around and causing trouble during this part of the story. I think both new players and veterans like me are going to love this when it comes out in December. Bring it on!
