‘I Don’t Look Pregnant’: Dwayne Johnson Doesn’t Hold Back While Talking About Losing All That Weight For New Role

Dwayne Johnson has created a successful career focused on his physical strength. From his time as The Rock in WWE to starring in major Hollywood action films, his impressive physique has always been a key part of his image. He recently gained 30 pounds to play MMA fighter Mark Kerr in the upcoming 2025 film, Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, but the Mummy Returns star is now losing that weight for a different role. True to his personality, he’s openly sharing details about this transformation.

I was reading Variety today, and apparently Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is taking on a really interesting role! He’s going to be playing a 75-year-old man in a film called Lizard Music, which is based on a pretty beloved, kind of underground novel by Daniel Pinkwater. From what I understand, this meant he had to lose a substantial amount of weight for the part, and he was telling Variety just how great it felt to do so. He shared this during a recent red carpet interview for his upcoming A24 movie, and he told the outlet:

I’ve been on a diet, and I’m so glad I’ve lost some weight. I can finally tuck my shirt in now… I no longer look pregnant, so everything is great!

The Jumanji star described the new look with a comparison that says it all. He continued:

Think Clint Eastwood at 75. Sinewy muscles, he’s lean. But it feels good.

This represents a significant change for an actor known for playing powerful characters in Hollywood for many years. Although his most popular films – including Fast & Furious, Black Adam, and Jungle Cruise – have relied on his muscular physique, the Moana star appears determined to change how people perceive him. With Lizard Music, this slimmer, more mature look isn’t just for show; it’s essential to the film’s strange and playful atmosphere.

The reduction in size happened just as Johnson and Safdie attended the premiere of The Smashing Machine in Los Angeles. The movie is a sports drama where the Black Adam actor plays Mark Kerr, a groundbreaking MMA fighter who battled addiction and attempted a return to the sport. Emily Blunt co-stars as Dawn Staples, Kerr’s girlfriend for many years.

The Smashing Machine isn’t the only project Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are working on. They also hinted that they might make another movie based on their Disney theme park ride, Jungle Cruise (which you can watch by subscribing to Disney+). Emily Blunt shared this news with Variety:

I think we need to try a different approach now. I was thinking, ‘What can we do?’ Let’s contact Disney. Maybe they can get us back on the boat.

The Red One actor immediately shared her enthusiasm, saying, “We’re going to contact those people tonight. We really enjoyed ourselves.”

At 52, Dwayne Johnson’s recent physical change feels like a genuine shift, not just for a single movie. After consistently portraying one of Hollywood’s most recognizable bodies for years, he appears keen to explore different types of roles, which is great news for an actor with such an impressive list of films. Taking on the part of a lean, aged 75-year-old man with a chicken companion might seem like a risky move, but that’s precisely what makes it interesting.

If The Smashing Machine showed that Dwayne Johnson is capable of delivering a powerful and emotionally vulnerable performance, then his future films, such as Lizard Music, seem poised to showcase a more unusual, subtle, and lighthearted side of him. And based on what he’s said, he’s excited to take on these roles-particularly now that he’s shed some weight. (He’s joking, naturally. Mostly.)

The Smashing Machine will be released in cinemas on October 3rd. Please see your local cinema’s schedule for showtimes.
