I’ll admit, sometimes I just want to get to the action and skip the cutscenes. But honestly, a really good story can totally make or break a game for me. The thing is, not every game’s story is easy to follow. Some games have plots that are so complicated, you actually need to go online and look up explanations – I’ve definitely been there! While that might seem like a bad thing, it can actually be a good one. Some of the most beloved games ever made are actually really complex and twisty – it’s part of what makes them so engaging. It’s weird, but it works!

The way a story is told varies from game to game. Some, such as Hades 2, present the entire narrative through conversations. Others, like Baldur’s Gate 3, let your decisions shape the story, offering different experiences each time. And some games are just packed with so many surprises that it can be tough to follow everything that happens. The games featured on our list may have complex storylines, but players still enjoy them.

3. Chrono Cross

Chrono Cross is set in the same universe as Chrono Trigger, but it’s a very different experience. The story is quite complex, dealing with parallel worlds and different versions of reality. You play as Serge, who is trying to figure out what’s happening in his world and why he apparently died as a child in another one. It’s already a difficult story to follow, and it’s made even more challenging by a large cast of characters, making the game known for being complicated.

Chrono Cross has a somewhat divided fanbase because its story can be complex and difficult to understand. While it was praised by critics and sold very well, some players were disappointed by how it differed from Chrono Trigger. Even though keeping track of the characters and the time travel elements can be challenging, those who enjoy Chrono Cross are very passionate about it, making it one of the most beloved games with intricate storylines.

2. Xenogears

This RPG, released in 1998 by Squaresoft, went on to create the entire Xeno franchise. Although the gameplay hasn’t held up perfectly over time, many people still believe it has one of the best storylines in JRPG history. However, understanding that story can be a challenge! The game features incredibly detailed and complex background information, and explores weighty themes like philosophy and science fiction. Plus, there are numerous unexpected plot twists, all while the main character struggles with amnesia.

A lot of players think Xenogears tried to do too much, with so many hints and subtle details that the story becomes hard to understand. However, many believe that figuring out the complex plot is worth it, leading to a deeply meaningful and rewarding experience. Therefore, even though it can be challenging to follow everything, Xenogears is still a much-loved JRPG.

1. Kingdom Hearts

It’s safe to say that very few franchises have a plot as intricate and bewildering as Kingdom Hearts. This complexity stems in part from the numerous spin-off games, many of which are now difficult to play because they were released for older consoles. However, these side games often provided essential details that helped players follow the story of Sora, Sora’s counterpart Roxas, and another character who bears a striking resemblance, Ventus.

Even though it’s become really tricky to understand everything happening in Kingdom Hearts nowadays, the game still has a dedicated fanbase. We’re eagerly anticipating Kingdom Hearts 4, and excitement for the next game hasn’t faded. Sora’s story can be confusing and challenging at times, but it’s obvious that players remain interested in seeing how it continues.
