This Horror Movie Has a Hilarious Title, But Marvel Fans Should Watch It Anyway

While horror might not be the first genre that comes to mind when Marvel fans discuss the MCU, it definitely deserves attention this Halloween. With highly anticipated Marvel films like Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day on the horizon, a recently released horror film should be high on everyone’s list. This movie, a unique blend of fairy tale and action horror, became available on streaming services as they added a variety of spooky titles in September, just in time for the Halloween season.

The film Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters began streaming on Paramount+ on September 1st. Directed and written by Tommy Wirkola, it first came out in cinemas in 2013. This was two years after its star, Jeremy Renner, first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Hawkeye, with a brief role in Thor. In the movie, Renner and Gemma Arterton play the famous fairy tale characters, Hansel and Gretel. The story takes place 15 years after they overcame the witch who tried to eat them; now adults, Hansel and Gretel have become expert bounty hunters specializing in eliminating witches.

Why You Should Watch Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

Okay, let’s be real – Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters isn’t a cinematic masterpiece. You definitely won’t find it on anyone’s “best of” lists, and honestly, it’s pretty flawed. The critics seem to agree, giving it only a 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes. But hear me out! Despite all that, I found it surprisingly entertaining. It’s one of those movies where you can completely switch off your brain and just have fun watching things blow up. I know it’s bad, but sometimes bad movies are good, you know? It’s a perfect guilty pleasure. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters isn’t high art, but it delivers on pure, mindless entertainment, and sometimes that’s exactly what I’m in the mood for. Rotten Tomatoes might not love it, but I kind of did!

This movie is packed with non-stop, over-the-top action from beginning to end, making it a really enjoyable action-adventure. It’s set in a dark and fantastical world – think fairy tales with witches and trolls – and the special effects are fantastic. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton share great chemistry on screen, creating a convincing and entertaining brother-sister relationship. Renner plays a grumpy Hansel, which nicely complements Arterton’s energetic and tough Gretel. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is the ideal choice when you’re looking for a lighthearted and completely silly movie to relax and enjoy.

Other Halloween Movies Now on Paramount+

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters became available on Paramount+ on September 1st, along with other spooky movies ideal for Halloween, including I Know What You Did Last Summer, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and the first three Scary Movie films. The streaming service added even more horror and thriller movies to its selection on October 1st.

If you have a Paramount+ subscription, you can now watch a variety of scary movies including 30 Days of Night, Lake Placid, the original three Scream movies, The Babysitter, The Evil Dead (from 1981), The Menu, Urban Legend, and many others. Most of these horror titles became available at the beginning of the month, with one more coming later. Vicious, a 2025 horror film directed by Bryan Bertino and starring Dakota Fanning, will start streaming on Paramount+ on October 10th.
