Okay, so Mario, that famous Italian plumber, is seriously Nintendo’s biggest star and makes them a ton of money. And I’m super excited because he’s heading back to space with the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2! It’s coming to the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, which is awesome. Honestly, we’re all hoping for a third Galaxy game, but let’s be real, not every wish comes true, right?
Naturally, the latest collection includes a number of improvements and modifications, and we’ll walk you through them so you have all the information you need if you’re considering buying it. With that said, let’s get started!
Release Date
First, let’s discuss when you can expect the game: Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 is coming out on October 2nd, 2025. It will cost $69.99, which might seem a little high for a re-release (but it’s Nintendo, so that’s not too unexpected!). The game will be available on both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo is offering both a traditional physical copy and a digital download, so you can pick whichever you prefer. Just keep in mind that the physical copies might be hard to find at first.
New Tie-in Amiibo
A new Amiibofigure is among the latest additions to Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. This one features Mario and Luma leaping through a star, and Nintendo notes it’s bigger than standard Amiibos. While it’s a separate purchase, it’s quite appealing and could be a nice addition to your collection, making it worth a look. However, like many other Amiibos, it’s selling out quickly, so if you’re interested, you should act fast.
Enhanced Resolution
With the increased processing power of the newer Nintendo console compared to the original Wii, Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 have been visually improved with higher resolution. This upgrade is noticeable in the trailers, and a direct comparison with the original versions confirms the improvement. The visuals now appear smoother, textures are sharper, and previously obscured details are much clearer, as the game is no longer limited by the Wii’s hardware.
Extra Storybook Chapters
A fresh update for Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 adds more storybook chapters for players to enjoy whenever they want. The new chapter details the backstory of Rosalina and Luma, and there’s also a completely new storybook focusing on the twin Luma brothers. While it’s a small addition, dedicated fans will love these new story details that will help them become even more invested in the world of Super Mario Galaxy.
A New Assist Mode
The Super Mario games aren’t typically very challenging, but offering accessibility features makes them more welcoming to everyone, and Nintendo is increasingly focused on creating games that can be enjoyed by a wider range of players. With that in mind, Super Mario Galaxy + Galaxy 2 is getting a new assist mode designed to help players who are having trouble fully experience the game’s stunning levels and fantastic music.
Flexibility of Purchase – Get Both or One
As a big Nintendo fan, I was really excited to see how they’re handling the release of Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2. It’s cool that they’re giving us some choice in how we buy it! You can get both games together in one package, or if you prefer, you can buy them separately. If you just want Super Mario Galaxy or its sequel, each one costs $40. Honestly, getting the full package is definitely the better deal, but it’s awesome that they let you pick just the game you love if you’re really obsessed with one of them!
Support for Mouse Controls
A key feature adding to the game’s adaptability is the ability to use Joy-Con controllers as a mouse, letting players enjoy a similar experience to the Wii Remote and Nunchuck from the original game. However, this functionality will only be available on the Joy-Cons that come with the Switch 2 – existing Switch owners will continue to use the standard controls.
Docked Mode Vs Handheld Mode
There are definitely some noticeable differences when playing Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 on your Nintendo Switch in docked versus handheld mode, and the biggest one is the resolution. When played in docked mode, the game can reach resolutions up to 4K, with the aim of running at 60 frames per second. In handheld mode, the target resolution is 1080p, also at 60fps. Considering how well previous Nintendo games have performed, and the fact that this game is older, the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 shouldn’t have trouble maintaining these resolutions and frame rates.
Difference between Switch and Switch 2 Releases
Regarding the differences between the Switch and Switch 2, they are minimal. You can expect Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 to look and play very similarly on both systems, though the newer Switch 2 will have some improvements. As we discussed earlier, these include a higher resolution, potentially up to upscaled 4K, and mouse controls which weren’t available on the original Joy-Cons.
Does It Tie Into The Upcoming Movie?
Many Mario fans are anticipating the Super Mario Galaxy movie, scheduled for release next April. While it’s clear the games are being released to coincide with the film, you might not know the movie will also draw inspiration from them. The storyline might not be a direct adaptation, but expect plenty of nods and references to the games, particularly from the recently added Storybook chapters.
File sizes for each game on Switch and Switch 2
As a Nintendo fan, one thing I always worry about before buying a new game is how much storage space it’ll take up. Especially with the Switch or the upcoming Switch 2, since they don’t have nearly as much storage as consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. But I’m happy to say that even with updated textures and new content, Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 hasn’t become a massive download! Both the Switch version and the Switch 2 version only need about 5 GB of storage. That’s really good, because it doesn’t take up a huge chunk of your available gaming space. It’s great stuff, honestly!
Mario Transformations
The core gameplay of Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel centers on navigating platforming levels with reduced gravity. However, a variety of power-ups significantly enhance Mario’s control and make the platforming much more diverse. For example, you can turn into a bee, possess a Boo, or glide across fragile ice as Ice Mario. While it doesn’t offer quite the same freedom as Super Mario Odyssey, these games first introduced many of the ideas that would later be expanded upon.
The Setting and General Gameplay Mechanics For Newcomers
If you’re unfamiliar with the Galaxy games, here’s a quick overview of what Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel offer. Taking place in outer space, Super Mario Galaxy is a 3D platforming adventure where you journey through uniquely designed planets, collecting stars to rescue Princess Peach from the villainous Bowser.
As we discussed earlier, the core of the gameplay is the innovative gravity system, and you’ll find a wide variety of creative challenges and settings across all the levels in both the original game and its sequel. Even though these games are over ten years old, the platforming feels remarkably good even now, so you can still have a fantastic time if you’re playing them for the first time.
