Sports Interactive, the developer behind the popular management simulation game, has just released a new trailer for Football Manager 26. This trailer dives into the game’s various match tactics and highlights what’s new and different this time around. The video, which is a little over 4 minutes long and can be viewed below, also explains how much control players will have over their strategies, both when they have the ball and when they don’t.
Players will have access to both offensive and defensive tactics, each presented on its own dedicated screen. This gives them all the tools necessary to precisely control what every player on their team does in any game scenario. These new screens also integrate with the game’s updated user interface, allowing players to better visualize how their different tactical choices work together.
When discussing the importance of this feature, Sports Interactive match QA analyst Jack Sarahs explained, “The core idea is to let players realistically recreate the strategies of their favorite real-life managers. To do that, the game needs to accurately simulate both how teams play when they have the ball and when they don’t, mirroring their actual tactics.”
The second section focuses on practical application. For instance, in Football Manager 24, if you set up a tactic with a winger in a 4-3-3 and wanted to shift him to attacking midfield when your team had possession, it would automatically change his defensive duties. Now, with our new in possession and out of possession roles, you can make that change specifically for when you’re in possession without altering how he defends.
Senior lead match QA analyst CJ Ramson discussed how the latest update will affect player roles. Ramson clarified that player roles are now divided into two categories: when a team has possession of the ball and when they don’t. The ‘in possession’ roles include some new options, as well as updates to existing ones. However, the ‘out of possession’ roles are entirely new.
According to Ramson, even if two teams line up in the same way when they have the ball, their actions when the other team has possession can cause them to play very differently. He explained, “One of the biggest things for me is you can have two identical formations in possession for two different teams, but the roles and how they behave out of possession will make it behave differently.”
In addition to everything else, Ransom and Sarahs presented a new tool called the visualiser. This feature lets players examine their formations and strategies in more detail, including information like shot accuracy, pass completion rates, and other data. It shows how the team transitions from defense to attack, how frequently players might try to run down the clock, and the overall pace the team is expected to play at.
Football Manager 26 is in development for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Android, and iOS, and will be released on all platforms on November 4th.
