and LEGO have collaborated successfully in recent years, notably with Nintendo to create amazing LEGO sets based on franchises like Mario Kart and Super Mario World. Therefore, when LEGO , there was a lot of anticipation.
Okay, so the LEGO Game Boy set is finally out, and everyone is still totally hyped about it! But get this – it’s gotten even more amazing. An incredible circuit board designer and Game Boy modder from Australia, Natalie the Nerd, has actually managed to make the LEGO Game Boy playable! I can’t believe it!
How did Natalie make a LEGO Game Boy playable?
Initially, Natalie began the process by mentioning that she would create a printed circuit board for the LEGO Game Boy kit. It started as a joke, but she soon realized she actually had the ability to do it.
She described how she created it, saying, “I started with just the available photos. I used the image’s size to adjust it on my computer, and then figured out the measurements for the screen parts – that’s where I wanted to place the Game Boy. I also included the power system I use for my Safer Charger boards, switched to a power button that stays on with a gentle press, and added connections for the buttons and sound.”
She noted that the buttons were tricky, but she had a plan, “I didn’t really know what the buttons on the Lego would be like, but the fact that they could be pressed was enough for me to know I could implement them. At the moment I have them wired up to custom 3D printed *toy brick* parts. Same with the USB C”
So yeah, she was able to make a playable LEGO Game Boy!
Can you find out how to mod the LEGO Game Boy yourself?
As we mentioned earlier, it’s not as easy as finding a customized LEGO Game Boy at a store like Target. If you want a working LEGO Game Boy, you’ll need to build it yourself. But don’t worry, Natalie has instructions to help you through the process. Even then, Natalie has you covered.
Natalie frequently posts her circuit board designs online. When someone requested a tutorial on social media, she responded [smiling emoji] that she’s planning to release one as soon as she’s satisfied with it. So, to follow Natalie’s impressive design, you’ll need some experience with modding. However, if you’re already reasonably skilled in that area, Natalie seems like she’ll be able to walk you through building your own playable LEGO Game Boy, which is really awesome.
