Okay, let’s be real – I was really hoping today, October 3rd, 2025, would be the day we finally got The Batman: Part II. Sadly, we’re not living in that timeline just yet. Back when The Batman first hit theaters on March 4th, 2022, it was a massive win. Critics loved it – an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes is nothing to sneeze at – but more importantly, *audiences* went wild for it. The film pulled in $772 million worldwide, and considering it was the first standalone Batman movie since The Dark Knight Rises, it felt like a really exciting new beginning for the Caped Crusader. A sequel was practically guaranteed, announced the very next month, but honestly, it’s taken a surprisingly long time for it to actually arrive.
Originally, Part II was planned for release in 2025, about three and a half years after the first film – a typical timeframe for superhero movie sequels. However, the release date was moved to October 2nd, 2026, and then again to October 1st, 2027, which currently appears to be the final date. Although fans are understandably disappointed, the delays are easily explained: the 2023 WGA strike prevented Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin from finishing the script as quickly, and getting everything just right has simply taken more time.
Reeves didn’t hurry the process; he carefully considered the story’s direction and made sure the script was as good as it could be before starting filming. This is simply how some projects work – some take more time than others. The script for The Batman 2 was completed in June 2025, but filming couldn’t begin right away. Coordinating everyone’s schedules and starting pre-production will take time, so shooting is anticipated to start in spring 2026. This should give the team enough time to meet the planned October 2027 release date.
Matt Reeves Has Revealed Multiple Details About The Batman 2

After completing the screenplay, Reeves has quickly provided updates about what fans can anticipate in The Batman 2. He’s carefully avoided revealing any major plot points, but he has offered some hints about the story’s direction, such as:
- The Batman: Part II is not part of the DCU, but rather an Elseworlds story. There has long been speculation about whether Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight could join James Gunn’s new universe, but Reeves has definitively quashed this.
- Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) will not appear in the movie, despite The Penguin‘s ending suggesting it could happen, not to mention the character’s immediate popularity thanks to that TV show.
- The story will venture into territory that hasn’t been done before with Batman/Bruce Wayne, and in particular, will be diving deeper into the latter side of the character.
- The villain will be somebody new, who has “never really been done” in a movie.
Reeves most likely means a live-action movie, but it would mean Barry Keoghan’s Joker won’t be the main villain of The Batman 2. Possible candidates for who the villain(s) could be include Hush, Hugo Strange, or the Court of Owls. - The Batman 3 is not yet a guaranteed thing, with the focus very much on the first sequel, though the director hopes this will be a trilogy.
While it’s a bit sad that Sofia won’t be returning – she’s one of the most compelling DC villains we’ve seen in movies – the other news is really encouraging. It seems that even though The Batman: Part II has been in development for a while, taking the time to create something truly great is important, and this film will be worth the wait.
The Batman is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
