Films such as The Breakfast Club, The Lost Boys, and Big Trouble in Little China contributed to making the 1980s a memorable era for beloved cult films, and now one of the very best is available on Netflix. Netflix recently added new content for October 2025. As subscribers explore the wide range of new titles, they should definitely check out this classic ‘80s story about growing up, particularly with a sequel currently in development.
Richard Donner’s beloved film The Goonies, a classic from the 1980s, became available on Netflix starting October 1st. The movie is a charming and exciting tale about the bonds of childhood and the thrill of finding treasure. It centers on a group of kids who find an old pirate map and set off on a grand adventure to locate the hidden riches. This addition to Netflix’s offerings comes shortly after Warner Bros. revealed that a The Goonies sequel is being planned. While still in its early phases, the new movie will feature Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus – the original creators of the 1985 hit – as producer and executive producer, respectively.
Why You Should Watch The Goonies
Featuring a fantastic creative team – including Superman’s Richard Donner directing, Home Alone’s Chris Columbus writing, and E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark’s Steven Spielberg creating the story and executive producing – it’s no wonder The Goonies became a defining adventure film of the 1980s, and remains beloved today. The movie captures the wonder of being a child with its exciting, quick-moving plot, complete with a treasure hunt, tricky traps, and a dangerous quest. This provides a strong escape from the serious, grown-up issues the young characters are dealing with, making The Goonies more than just a fun adventure. It’s a lasting story about growing up, discovering who you are, the importance of friendship, and the sometimes sad feeling of leaving childhood behind.
The Goonies was a huge success, earning $69 million globally from a $19 million budget. It became a defining film of the 1980s and helped make stars out of its young cast, including Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan. Even after 40 years, the movie is still a much-loved and memorable adventure film with a strong sense of nostalgia, and it continues to be enjoyable. As the film’s famous line says, “Goonies never say die.”
New Movies Streaming on Netflix
I was so excited to see that The Goonies isn’t the only new thing on Netflix! Netflix added a ton of great titles on October 1st, and I’ve been checking them out. If you’re looking for something to watch with the whole family, they now have Casper Daddy Day Care, and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax available. But that’s not all – I also noticed the first three Beverly Hills Cop movies, Dirty Dancing, The Hurt Locker, The Mask, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Pineapple Express are all new streaming options too!
