Bethesda is offering one of its most popular games as a free download. As if that weren’t great enough, they’re also giving away its sequel for free! The first game was released in 2008, and the second in 2010. These two role-playing games are now 17 and 15 years old, and while they might feel a little dated by today’s standards (2025), they are still enjoyable, for the most part.
Out of these two games, Fallout 3 is the more well-known. It was originally released in 2008. Fallout: New Vegas, released in 2010, is its sequel. Fallout: New Vegas will be available for free starting October 16 as part of Prime Gaming’s October offerings. Fallout 3 will follow on October 23, also through Prime Gaming. To claim these games, you’ll need both an Amazon Prime subscription and a GOG account, as the free codes are for GOG. Importantly, both offers include the premium versions of the games: the “Game of the Year Edition” of Fallout 3, and the “Ultimate Edition” of Fallout: New Vegas.
Fallout 3
Fallout 3 is a role-playing game (RPG) available on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, originally released in 2008 by Bethesda Game Studios. It’s the third main game in the Fallout series and the first one Bethesda developed after obtaining the rights. With this release, Bethesda significantly changed the series, moving it from a 2D, turn-based style to a 3D game featuring action-packed, real-time combat. Thankfully, this was a positive change. Fallout 3 became a huge commercial and critical success, selling very well and earning a 93 rating on Metacritic. Because of this, it’s frequently considered one of the greatest RPGs ever made.
Fallout New Vegas
What makes Fallout: New Vegas-available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360-stand out is that it’s not just a spin-off, but it was created by a different studio, Obsidian Entertainment. Although it didn’t achieve the same sales numbers or critical acclaim as other titles-receiving an 84 on Metacritic-it has become a beloved favorite among many fans of the series, with some even preferring it to Fallout 3. Its relevance is especially high now, as Season 2 of the Fallout TV show will feature the game’s setting, New Vegas.
Since Fallout 5 is still quite a ways off, Fallout fans will have to keep enjoying the older games to satisfy their cravings. While newer titles like Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 can do the trick, many believe Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are superior, and they’re both becoming available for free soon.
