As a big fan of science fiction, I’ve noticed that a lot of what’s labeled “sci-fi” really leans heavily into the fiction part. These stories are amazing at creating bizarre and imaginative worlds and scenarios, really making you think and often stretching what we know about real science. But every now and then, a project comes along that truly prioritizes the science, and when they get it right… well, it’s not just one of the most accurate sci-fi films ever made, it’s a genuine modern masterpiece – and I’m thrilled to share that it’s now available on Netflix.
In case you’re wondering, the movie we’re talking about is Ridley Scott’s The Martian. Released in 2015, The Martian marked a return to science fiction for the director of Alien, but this time with a strong emphasis on being realistic and accurate. The film features Matt Damon as Mark Watney, a botanist who finds himself alone on Mars after a NASA mission goes wrong. The story then follows his struggle to survive the harsh conditions on Mars while awaiting rescue. The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Andy Weir.
The Martian Has Been Hailed as One of The Best Sci-Films Ever (And One of The Most Accurate)

What captivates audiences about The Martian is its commitment to scientific accuracy regarding space exploration and our understanding of Mars. For instance, the method Watney employs to create water is actually a technique NASA is developing for a Mars rover. Similarly, Watney’s resourceful potato garden reflected the knowledge researchers had about Mars at the time, although our understanding of Martian soil has grown since then. More broadly, the film excels at crafting a near-future narrative that remains grounded in established science and engineering. This approach not only enhances the film’s realism but also deepens the emotional impact of the human story, making for a truly exceptional and compelling experience.
This movie will also appeal to those who enjoyed Interstellar, another science fiction film known for its realism. Released in 2014, Interstellar tells the story of astronauts traveling through a wormhole near Saturn, seeking a new planet for humanity as Earth faces devastation from a plant disease and widespread hunger. Although the plots of the two films differ significantly, they both explore themes of survival and feature compelling, character-driven narratives grounded in scientific principles. Another connection? Matt Damon also stars in Interstellar, playing an astronaut sent to a frozen planet.
If You Like The Martian, Another Andy Weir Adaptation Is Coming Soon

If you were looking for another reason to watch The Martian, here’s one! Andy Weir, the author of The Martian, also wrote the critically praised sci-fi novel Project Hail Mary, which is now being made into a movie. Starring Ryan Gosling, the film is scheduled for release next March. Interestingly, Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay for The Martian, is also writing the screenplay for this new adaptation.
The Martian is now streaming on Netflix.
