Okay, so I just found out one of EA’s games is going offline for good in 48 hours. It’s kinda weird, though, because they’re not actually taking it off the store! They’re shutting down the servers, which will basically gut most of the fun stuff, but you’ll still be able to buy it on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Even on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility! Honestly, I don’t really see the point in buying it now, though. It’s already a 12-year-old game, and it’s losing most of what makes it playable in two days. It’s a strange decision. What I think this really means is that the game is still selling a decent number of copies, even now. That’s the only reason I can think of for them to keep it available.
Players of Need for Speed: Rivals have just about two days left to play the game online. The servers will be switched off on October 6th. We’ve been aware the game was ending since summer, and that date is now here. However, it appears not many players are going back for one last race. Steam’s active player count shows the EA game has only reached a little over 100 players in the last 24 hours.
About the Game
Need for Speed: Rivals came out in 2013, marking the 20th game in the racing series. It was the first Need for Speed title developed by Ghost Games, who took over the franchise from Criterion between 2013 and 2020. The game was a solid first effort for Ghost Games, as they stuck to a familiar formula. It received scores between 75 and 80 on Metacritic and sold well. However, with six more major Need for Speed games released since then, it doesn’t feel very significant now.
The Need for Speed series is in a strange spot currently, as existing games are being taken offline and there’s been no announcement about a new game. Recent reports suggest the series might be paused indefinitely. Also, EA has announced several other game shutdowns planned for this month.
With that covered, please share your thoughts in the comments below, or discuss it further on the ComicBook Forum. Are you planning to play Need for Speed Rivals again before the online servers are permanently taken offline?
