‘These Movies Aren’t For Critics.’ Elizabeth Olsen Gets Real About Whether She’d Play Scarlet Witch In The MCU Again

Elizabeth Olsen is returning to independent films with her new A24 movie, Eternity, a romantic comedy set in the afterlife, which is scheduled for release in 2025. However, fans of her work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are still hoping to see her reprise her role as Scarlet Witch. With speculation surrounding upcoming MCU projects, such as Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, directed by the Russo Brothers, Olsen’s potential return as the character is a major topic of discussion. This weekend, the actress directly addressed these rumors and shared her perspective.

During a “Conversation With…” discussion at the 2025 Hamptons International Film Festival (as reported by People), Olsen talked about how her career has developed, and how she manages to work on both small, personal films like Eternity and large, popular blockbusters. When someone asked if she would ever go back to working on Marvel movies, she answered honestly, telling the audience:

I truly enjoy this, and I always look forward to coming back to it. Over the past five years, I’ve been able to explore the character in ways I never imagined, which has been amazing. There are still storylines from the comics that I’d love to adapt – I think the fans would really appreciate them too. Ultimately, these films are made for the fans, not for critics.

That final statement is powerful. Considering the current, intense discussion around superhero movies – and the fact that many people are getting tired of them – Elizabeth Olsen emphasizes who she thinks these films are really made for. I imagine a lot of people at the Sag Harbor Cinema would feel the same way.

Looking back on her ten years playing Wanda Maximoff, the lead actress in Love & Death shared that she felt both “very lucky and very scared” when she first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her work on WandaVision (which you can stream with a Disney+ subscription) was so impressive it earned her an Emmy nomination, and the show itself changed expectations for future Marvel television series.

Additionally, the Kodachrome actress admitted that some viewers might be getting tired of superhero movies and shows. However, she also noted that it’s rare for an actor to have the chance to revisit the same role repeatedly in a way that feels comfortable and like coming home. She continued:

It’s truly unique… and I’m not sure I’ll experience something similar again unless I’m working on a long-running series. I really appreciate that kind of stability-it’s a good feeling. Of course, having job security is always welcome-I think everyone would agree with that.

Currently, Elizabeth Olsen is starring in Eternity. This film, directed by David Freyne, centers on Joan (Olsen) as she faces a difficult choice in the afterlife. She has one week to decide where to spend eternity – with her longtime partner (Teller) or her first love (Turner), who has waited decades for her. It’s a unique and compelling romantic story, featuring a fantastic cast that also includes John Early, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Olga Merediz.

Is Wanda Maximoff permanently out of the MCU? It doesn’t seem likely. While the actress who plays the character, Elizabeth Olsen, isn’t actively seeking more roles as the Scarlet Witch, she hasn’t ruled them out completely. If a compelling story emerges and fans are eager to see her return, the Scarlet Witch could reappear. Considering Marvel’s multiverse, absolutely anything could happen.

Eternity, which opened the festival on Oct. 3 and hits theaters Nov. 26.
