KPop Demon Hunters Stars Make Surprise Appearance on SNL

Netflix’s film was a major success, performing well both on its streaming service and in cinemas this year. Directed by Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, the movie made $18 million in theaters during its opening weekend and has an impressive audience score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes.

After the film became a huge hit, three actors from KPop Demon Hunters unexpectedly showed up on Saturday Night Live’s Season 51 premiere, which was hosted by Bad Bunny. According to reports, EJAE, Rei Ami, and Audrey Nuna surprised viewers by appearing in an SNL sketch. These three voice the characters Rumi, Zoey, and Mira in KPop Demon Hunters.

I have to say, seeing the singers on SNL was a real treat! They made their debut with a quick performance, popping up in a hilarious brunch-themed KPop Demon Hunters sketch. But even more exciting, it was the very first time they performed “Golden” live! The movie itself is a fun ride – it stars EJAE, Ami, and Nuna as K-pop idols who aren’t just performers, they’re secretly using their powers to shield their fans from all sorts of supernatural dangers. Definitely a unique premise, and they pulled it off!

This performance by the group happens before they’re scheduled to be on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on October 7th. They will be performing the full song on the show. The show’s soundtrack also received praise, staying in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart for several weeks. A follow-up project is already being developed at Netflix and Sony Animation.

Sony Pictures Animation started working on KPop Demon Hunters in 2021. Originally planned as a project just for Sony Pictures Animation, it was later given to Netflix without much anticipation. But the film quickly became a huge success, exceeding all expectations and becoming popular worldwide. Released on Netflix on June 20, 2025, the movie received praise from both critics and viewers for its story, voice performances, and music. By August, KPop Demon Hunters had become the most-watched movie in Netflix history, reaching over 326 million views.

What’s On Tap for the Sequel?

Director Maggie Kang is already thinking about what comes next for KPop Demon Hunters, and the film’s sound designer, Michael Babcock, has also shared his thoughts on a sequel. “We don’t necessarily need to follow the The Empire Strikes Back formula with KPop 2. Does it *have* to be a darker story?” Babcock explained. He also noted that directors Chris Applehans and Maggie Kang “aren’t just doing what everyone expects. They really want to create something original.”

In a recent conversation with Newsweek, Dan Lin, who leads Netflix Film, mentioned the company is looking for new projects. He explained that Netflix is “enthusiastic about potentially continuing the story of Huntrix.” Lin added that the success of KPDH is due to its inventive and original plot, and if they decide to make a sequel, they want to carefully develop a story that maintains the same spirit and originality as the first movie.
