Honestly, as a big Xbox fan, things haven’t been great lately. First, they raised the price of Game Pass Ultimate, and then they announced that even the highest-tier subscribers won’t get new Xbox games on day one anymore. It’s a bit disappointing! The good news, though, is that they’re adding Xbox Cloud Gaming to *all* Game Pass tiers, and there’s talk of a completely free tier coming soon, which could be awesome.
According to Tom Warren at The Verge, Microsoft is planning a new Xbox subscription tier that lets you play some games you already own without needing a Game Pass subscription – this includes games offered during Free Play Days and Xbox Retro Classics. The tier will include advertisements, with tests showing about two minutes of ads before games start. Currently, there’s no playtime limit, but Microsoft is reportedly testing a system that would give users five hours of free playtime per month, limited to one hour per gaming session.
Microsoft is planning to release a free version of Xbox Cloud Gaming, starting with a public beta test. After the test, they expect to fully launch it a few months later. This free tier will work not just on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PCs, but also on web browsers and handheld devices. Keep an eye out for an official announcement with more details soon.
