Most *Star Wars* video games focus on the Jedi and the Light Side of the Force. While games like *Knights of the Old Republic* and *Star Wars: The Force Unleashed* offer glimpses into the Sith and the Dark Side, they’re the exception. Often, even when you *can* play as a Dark Side character, it’s through choices you make rather than a dedicated story. Considering how popular villains like Darth Vader and Darth Maul are, there’s been a surprising lack of games that truly explore the Sith perspective. That’s why the future of Cal Kestis’ story is exciting – he could be the first Dark Side protagonist, or Respawn Entertainment could deliver a unique Sith experience we haven’t seen before.
Could Cal Kestis Join the Dark Side?
Cal Kestis has flirted with the Dark Side before, as we saw when Bode Akuna betrayed him and during their final confrontation where Cal had to tap into his darker emotions. The Dark Side isn’t something Cal fights externally only – it’s a temptation within him, subtly exploiting his strong attachments to those he cares about.
Cal has managed to avoid falling to the dark side, largely because of his connection with Merrin. She officially became his romantic partner in *Star Wars Jedi: Survivor*. Although she helped him return to the light after his conflict with Bode, his feelings for her could ultimately make him vulnerable to the dark side.
The Jedi Code forbids romantic relationships for a good reason. Strong emotional connections can make Force users vulnerable to the Dark Side. We’ve already seen how deeply Cal is affected by loss, and it raises the question: what if Merrin were to suffer a similar fate in the last game of this story?
Now that Cal has lost his connection to the Force and is likely filled with anger, can he recover? And would he even *want* to? Respawn Entertainment, the game developers, will need to explore that. But it’s not just about choosing between being a Jedi or a Sith. Cal’s personality suggests he could become a truly remarkable example of a Grey Jedi – someone who balances both sides of the Force.
Cal Kestis – a Grey Jedim
The idea of “Grey Jedi” is controversial among *Star Wars* fans, and understandably so. What we’ve learned about the Force suggests it needs balance between the light and dark sides. A separate, third option doesn’t really fit with that understanding, and that’s not what I’m proposing.
A Grey Jedi isn’t someone who uses the Dark Side, but rather a Force-user strongly aligned with the Light Side who disagrees with the Jedi Order’s rules. Characters like Qui-Gon Jinn and Ahsoka Tano exemplify this – they weren’t evil, but they acted independently because they didn’t always agree with the Jedi’s choices.
Cal Kestis has already begun to move on. He told Merrin, “The Jedi Order is finished, and I’m ready to let go. I finally know what I want.”
It seems like Cal is preparing to forge his own path. While it’s unclear how the story will unfold in the final game of the trilogy, it would allow the developers, Respawn, complete creative freedom with his character. Whether Cal embraces the Dark Side, remains on the Light, or finds a balance as a Grey Jedi, the ending promises a complex and interesting exploration of the Force.
Currently, details about the third game in the series are limited beyond the fact that it’s now in development, starting in 2024. The gap between the first two games was around four years, and while the wait for the final installment might be a bit shorter, 2028 is likely the earliest we can expect it. Fortunately, Respawn Entertainment has a history of delivering unexpected surprises, so we’re hoping for a spectacular conclusion to the trilogy.
