‘I Can’t Imagine Anything More Stupid Than That.’ O.J. Simpson Attorney Speaks Out After Diddy Sentencing

Last week in New York, the years-long legal battle involving Sean “Diddy” Combs came to an end with a sentencing hearing. Judge Arun Subramanian sentenced Combs to four years in prison and ordered him to pay a $500,000 fine. Since the sentencing, many celebrities and legal professionals have shared their opinions on the judge’s decision. However, one of O.J. Simpson’s former lawyers believes Combs made a significant error before the hearing.

Even before the judge announced his sentence, Sean Combs, 55, was already planning his next career moves. According to Fox News Digital, he was making arrangements to travel to another state for a speaking event, suggesting he expected to be released. Attorney Alan Dershowitz, well-known for defending O.J. Simpson, called Combs’ actions “foolish.”

I find that decision incredibly foolish. The fact that anyone allowed it to happen is shocking, and frankly, it disrespects the judge. It’s completely unacceptable. No ethical lawyer or responsible individual would ever permit something like that, and I would have resigned from the case immediately.

Alan Dershowitz appears to disagree with Sean “Diddy” Combs, but he’s also critical of Combs’ legal team for letting details of a planned performance become public. Dershowitz believes Combs was premature in trying to arrange a concert before his sentencing. He further voiced his disapproval of the business venture itself.

If Diddy had told me he was planning a public deal, as his lawyer, I would have immediately advised him to find new representation. I wouldn’t work with someone acting so recklessly and with such a poor understanding of the situation. I’m not willing to help a client knowingly walk into a disastrous outcome, and announcing a deal like that felt like a guaranteed failure.

Alan Dershowitz isn’t the first lawyer from O.J. Simpson’s defense team to speak about the Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs trial. Robert Shapiro offered his opinion after Combs’ sex trafficking trial ended in July, predicting a potential prison sentence of two and a half to three and a half years. He based this on the fact that Combs received a partially favorable verdict, meaning not all charges resulted in conviction.

Sean Combs was convicted of transporting individuals for the purpose of prostitution. However, he was found not guilty on more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Despite the acquittal on those major charges, Combs still faces a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years due to the convictions he received.

After the sentencing, Diddy’s former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura – who testified at the trial and had previously sued him alleging sex trafficking and abuse – responded through her lawyer. The lawyer told ABC News that while the sentence couldn’t erase the harm Diddy caused, it acknowledged the severity of his actions. Separately, singer Aubrey O’Day, formerly of Danity Kane, advised young artists to protect themselves when working with powerful people.

Currently, Team Combs intends to challenge the sentencing, but hasn’t officially filed an appeal yet. It’s not certain whether Diddy’s scheduled speaking event influenced the judge’s decision, as Alan Dershowitz suggests. For now, everyone will have to wait and see what Combs decides to do next.
