Lucasfilm, known for its Disney+ shows like *The Mandalorian & Grogu*, appears to be focusing more on making movies again, with *Star Wars: Starfighter* also planned. However, they aren’t giving up on TV completely. Season 2 of *Star Wars: Ahsoka* is still in development as the only live-action Star Wars series currently being made. Production began earlier this year, and the team is using new filming techniques that move beyond the studio’s usual virtual set. After several months of filming, *Ahsoka* Season 2 has now reached a major production milestone.
Natasha Liu Bordizzo, who plays Sabine Wren in the Ahsoka series, celebrated the end of filming for Season 2 by posting a behind-the-scenes photo with Rosario Dawson on her Instagram Stories. The photo shows the actresses posing in a way that fans on Reddit quickly noticed mirrored a famous mural of the Mortis gods from the Star Wars Rebels animated series. You can see the behind-the-scenes image, shared by the X account Star Wars Holocron, below.

The Mortis Gods Are Important to Star Wars: Ahsoka
Okay, so that caption from Bordizzo – “and as for this journey… it only gets more epic” – has me *really* excited for what’s coming in *Ahsoka* Season 2. I’m pretty sure the Mortis Gods are going to be a huge part of the story. Remember how Season 1 ended with Baylan Skoll heading to Peridea and stumbling upon those statues? Those gods – sometimes called the Ones – first showed up in a fantastic arc on *The Clone Wars*. It involved Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka going to this place called Mortis to check out an old distress signal. Basically, these gods *are* the Force – the Daughter is the light side, the Son is the dark side, and the Father is all about keeping them balanced. It was a seriously mind-bending storyline, and I can’t wait to see how they tie it all together in the new season.
In the first season of *Ahsoka*, Baylan Skoll revealed his desire to move beyond the endless conflict between the Jedi and Sith by seeking a greater power. The Mortis Gods seem to be central to this goal. While it’s unclear how they’ll appear in season two, understanding and harnessing their power would likely give Baylan a deeper understanding of the Force. Baylan is a fascinating character in the Star Wars universe. He fell to the dark side after Order 66, but he doesn’t identify as a Sith. Instead of seeing the Force as simply light or dark, he appears to embrace all its facets, giving him a more complete and balanced perspective.
The Mortis God statues in *Ahsoka* are particularly interesting because they suggest the Force isn’t limited to the galaxy we usually see in Star Wars. After significantly expanding the mythology of the Force through animated series like *The Clone Wars* and *Rebels*, *Ahsoka* creator Dave Filoni appears ready to do the same with his live-action show. While some might think there’s been too much new Star Wars content since Disney+ began, this demonstrates the power of TV series. The format allows creators to develop familiar elements of the franchise in ways that a movie often can’t. Any future discoveries about the Mortis Gods are bound to be exciting, and learning more about their origins will be fascinating.
With Season 2 of *Ahsoka* finished, fans are eagerly awaiting news about when it will be released. A premiere date is the most important thing people want to know, and with production wrapping up now, a 2026 release seems likely. It might be smart to wait and release Season 2 after *The Mandalorian & Grogu* movie hits theaters. This film marks the return of Star Wars to the big screen after a seven-year break, and Lucasfilm will likely focus on promoting it heavily throughout next year to ensure a successful box office run. Considering Season 1 of *Ahsoka* premiered in August 2023, a similar release timeframe for Season 2 is possible.
