Sony’s Acquisition of Bungie Continues to Be Questioned as Destiny 2 Falls Off a Cliff

Destiny 2, the continually updated online shooter game made by Bungie, is currently having a hard time keeping players engaged.

While a large expansion related to Star Wars is scheduled for December, currently there’s a lot of negativity surrounding the overall state of Destiny 2.

A detailed report from The Game Post effectively outlines the many challenges facing the game’s development team.

Many players have lost faith in Bungie. There’s a widespread feeling that Destiny 2 isn’t providing enough new content to hold players’ interest – a common problem for long-running games. Sadly, data supports this criticism.

So, I was checking Steam stats, and it looks like Destiny 2 is at a really low point right now. It’s averaging only about 18,439 players over the last month – that’s the lowest I’ve ever seen it!

While many games would consider these numbers good, for Destiny 2, they show a significant decline. Just over a year ago, the game was performing three times better.

So, I’ve been playing this shooter for about a year and a half now, and honestly, it’s been losing players consistently. We usually see a bump when a new expansion drops – that makes sense, right? – but even those boosts aren’t as big as they used to be. It’s a little worrying, to be real.

For example, when The Final Shape launched in June 2024, it attracted over 314,000 players at its peak. However, the recent release, The Edge of Fate, which came out this summer, only reached a peak of around 98,000 players.

While Steam numbers aren’t the only way to measure success, they usually give a good idea of how popular a game is. It’s become clear that Destiny 2’s popularity has been decreasing for some time now.

A lot of people think Bungie should have begun winding down the current game when they first started planning seasonal content. While many are asking for a Destiny 3, it’s looking increasingly unlikely Bungie could realistically take on a project that big right now.

This brings us back to Sony’s purchase of the company. While the $3.6 billion deal happened in 2022, it feels like a long time ago, and people are still debating whether it was the right decision.

Honestly, it feels like Bungie hasn’t had much good press lately. And with everything going on with Marathon, their other shooter, it’s really got a tough road ahead. They’re doing a technical test this month, which is a start, but it *needs* to be amazing to win back fans after all the drama. I’m hoping they can really turn things around!

What do you make of everything happening with Bungie recently? And what are your predictions for the future of Destiny 2? Feel free to share your thoughts, and maybe even focus on the positive side of things, in the comments below.
