This year’s movie schedule has been full of enjoyable surprises, but few have been as funny and chaotic as *The Naked Gun*. The film is a fantastic parody and a worthy sequel to the original *Naked Gun*, starring Liam Neeson and clearly inspired by the classic Leslie Nielsen movies. One joke in particular reminded me of the *Austin Powers* films, and felt like a deliberate nod to that series from director Akiva Schaffer.
It’s common for comedies to share jokes, and spoof movies are especially known for their funny gags. This isn’t the first instance of these two movie series taking inspiration from each other. Let’s explore how they’ve playfully referenced each other over time.
The Bonkers Infrared Sequence Is A More Over-The-Top Version Of A Scene In Austin Powers: The Spy You Shagged Me
I remember being completely blown away by the trailer for *The Naked Gun* last summer – specifically, this hilarious bit where they used an infrared camera to spy on Frank Drebin Jr. and Beth Davenport while they were just… making a turkey! I finally got around to watching the full movie on Paramount+, and that scene just kept escalating. It took these totally normal things – cleaning, basting a turkey, even petting a dog – and made them ridiculously funny. It was one of those scenes that just kept getting wilder and funnier the longer it went on.
This scene is a much wilder and more outrageous version of the famous silhouette scene from *Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me*. In that film, Mike Myers and Heather Graham’s characters playfully prepare for a mission while Dr. Evil’s guards mistakenly believe they’re witnessing something inappropriate. While *The Spy Who Shagged Me* felt daring for its time, it doesn’t compare to the completely over-the-top recreation in *The Naked Gun*, particularly the use of a turkey baster with infrared lighting.

But This Isn’t The First Time The Franchises Have Borrowed Jokes From Each Other
It’s not the first time these two series have shared similar humor. The famous bathroom break scene in *Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery*, where Mike Myers’ character takes an extremely long time in the restroom, seems to be inspired by a joke from the first *Police Squad* movie, which came out almost ten years before.
Do you remember the hilarious scene in *The Naked Gun* where Leslie Nielsen’s character, Frank Drebin, accidentally left his microphone on while using the restroom during a press conference about the Queen of England’s visit? For over a minute, everyone had to listen to the unfortunate mishap! A similar, equally awkward moment happened in 1997’s *Austin Powers*, when Austin Powers used the restroom immediately after being unfrozen, with Basil Exposition visibly uncomfortable as a witness.
I absolutely love that *The Naked Gun* and *Austin Powers* movies have similar jokes! I’ve always had a pretty immature sense of humor, and I enjoy silly, well-made comedy like this. Honestly, we could use a lot more of it.
