So, apparently, Ubisoft was working on an Assassin’s Creed game set during and right after the American Civil War! That’s what Game File is reporting, and honestly, that sounds amazing. I wish they’d actually released it!
I’m saying it ‘existed’ because it looks like Ubisoft quietly cancelled this project last year, and we’re *just* now finding out about it. Details are slowly coming to light, which is kinda weird.
This installment of Assassin’s Creed would have been the most recently set in the series’ history, unfolding in the 1870s during America’s Reconstruction era after the Civil War.
The game was planned to star a Black man as the main character – a formerly enslaved person from the Southern United States. The story would have followed his return to the South to battle ongoing injustice, and included references to the Ku Klux Klan.
According to sources, Ubisoft leaders decided the project was too risky – or had the potential to be – and cancelled it.
Some believe the publisher’s choice was affected by the current political climate in the US, along with the negative online reaction to Yasuke, the Black main character in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
According to Game File, people familiar with the project were disappointed by the cancellation, believing Ubisoft pulled the plug because they were worried about potential backlash.
This is the first concrete news about this project, though rumors have suggested Ubisoft is working on several Assassin’s Creed games, including a remake of Black Flag that’s been long anticipated.
What are your thoughts? Would you enjoy an Assassin’s Creed game taking place after the American Civil War? Let Ubisoft know in the comments!
