In her new Netflix documentary, premiering October 9th, she playfully suggests that her calm demeanor during difficult times might give the impression she’s detached from reality. However, she explains it’s simply her way of remaining composed – a practiced poker face.

She doesn’t need to prove anything, especially after years of silencing critics who underestimated her skills and expertise.

While most people know the Spice Girls eventually split up, Victoria Beckham’s life became quite challenging afterward. She and David recently shared, for the first time, just how risky her attempt to launch a fashion brand was – and how close the business came to failing due to years of poor financial decisions.
She remembered feeling conflicted about going home, because she’d be facing both her husband and her business partner. She really disliked having to discuss financial difficulties when the company wasn’t doing well. ‘He had invested in the business, and it was awful,’ she said. ‘I absolutely hated those conversations.’

Victoria Adams, also known as Posh Spice, married David Beckham in 1999. At the time, she had an 18-month-old son, Brooklyn. That November, the Spice Girls – in what turned out to be their last performance with the original lineup – appeared at the MTV Europe Music Awards. When the group took a break (and later officially split in 2001), Victoria admitted she wasn’t sure what her next step would be.
In the 2025 Netflix documentary *Victoria Beckham*, she described her family as “amazing,” but admitted she felt isolated and things had slowed down. She recalled wondering if anyone would hire her for photoshoots again and questioning what her next step would be.
David, who figured his wife could use rest, soon realized that what she really needed was purpose.
He admitted that while his own life remained consistent—he kept working and doing what he enjoyed—things changed significantly for her. He added that he didn’t fully understand how difficult that was for her at the time.
Victoria admits that while she and others now joke about the intense public focus on her body – including being weighed on TV just six months after giving birth to Brooklyn in March 1999 – it was actually a painful experience, as she was very young at the time.
It really shook my confidence and made me dislike who I was becoming. It consumed me, and I felt disconnected from reality – I barely recognized myself when I looked in the mirror. I was incredibly self-critical and unhappy with my appearance. People have described me as everything from ‘chubby’ to ‘too thin.’
Being considered too thin was just as problematic as being seen as overweight. Because Victoria couldn’t stop the constant media attention to her body, she began to control her weight in a way that was deeply damaging to her health. She admitted that people with eating disorders become skilled at deception, and she kept her struggles hidden from her parents and the public. She explained that being constantly told she wasn’t good enough had a lasting impact on her, something she’s carried throughout her life.
In the documentary, Victoria revealed she intentionally sought media attention to remain relevant after her family relocated to Spain in 2003 following David’s transfer to Real Madrid.
Looking back on their time in Spain, it was a really tough period for David and me. The tabloids were relentless, constantly trying to spin a narrative that our marriage was falling apart with all sorts of untrue stories. It’s something we touched on briefly in my book, but the Netflix documentary really dives into how much of a struggle it was for David. Honestly, while he was dealing with that public scrutiny, I was also navigating what came *after* the Spice Girls. I was trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted next, separate from the band, and it was a big transition.
She described feeling lost and stuck, despite being grateful for her life. She realized she needed a clear direction and promised herself that if she ever got another chance, she wouldn’t let it slip away.
Victoria shared in her Netflix series that after starting her fashion label in 2008, she invited Anna Wintour to her runway shows every season, but the Vogue editor-in-chief never actually attended.
Anna confirmed she would attend in September 2013 and sat in the front row with David and their two-year-old daughter, Harper Beckham, when Victoria presented her spring 2014 collection at New York Fashion Week.
Anna explained that she initially saw Victoria Beckham as a member of the Spice Girls and appreciated her fashion sense. However, when Victoria started pursuing design, Anna was skeptical. ‘Most celebrities who enter the fashion world aren’t real designers,’ she thought, ‘so I assumed this was just a passing interest. I didn’t really believe she was serious about it.’
Anna, who left her position as editor-in-chief of *Vogue* in June 2025 but still holds leadership roles at Condé Nast, admitted in the documentary that she initially doubted the trend, as people in the fashion industry, including herself, can sometimes be dismissive of new ideas and view them as just a temporary hobby.
But, she added, “Victoria was one that totally proved us wrong.”
By 2016, Victoria had become a successful and recognized designer, but she admitted things were actually falling apart. In a series, she described her fashion brand’s situation as a snowball quickly gathering speed and heading for disaster.
David invested a lot of money in his wife’s company, but never received any return on his investment, he said. He explained they had always promised to support each other, but he was concerned because the business wasn’t financially stable.
Looking back, Victoria admitted they had spent a lot of money unnecessarily and were deeply in debt – millions of pounds over budget. She felt lost and didn’t know how to fix the situation.
She admitted that while the rumors about her fashion brand struggling weren’t malicious, they were true, and she had to accept the difficult situation. She described feeling overwhelmed and stuck, like she was sinking in quicksand.
She really disliked discussing her business problems with her husband, but she felt she had to since he had a financial stake in it.
David recalled that when he and his wife met in 1997, she was significantly wealthier than he was – she even purchased their Hertfordshire home, famously called “Beckingham Palace.” Because of this, he understood how difficult it was for her to ask him for financial help.
He shared that a portion of their conversation was deeply upsetting, explaining that Victoria is a very proud person. He also admitted it was a difficult moment for both of them, as he couldn’t afford to continue supporting their situation.
David Belhassen, of Neo Investment Partners, initially didn’t want to invest in Victoria’s business. His firm bought a third of the company in 2017 and later helped improve its financial situation, but he was hesitant at first.
He described it as a complete failure, explaining that the venture never turned a profit. He added that he’d rarely encountered a more difficult situation to resolve.
Belhassen explained that he had a change of heart after praising his wife’s outfit one evening and discovering she was wearing Victoria Beckham—and she was a big fan of the designer.
He explained that before he could help, he needed to know if she was truly ready to face reality. For a long time, people had only told her things she *wanted* to believe, not necessarily what was true.
According to Belhassen, the company was wasting money – spending 70,000 annually on office plants and an additional 15,000 to have someone come and water them.
Victoria admitted in the doc that her “entertainment background” led to overindulging.
Looking back, I’m honestly shocked by how much waste there was. I mean, fifteen different linings for jackets? It sounds crazy now, but I let it happen. There were even things like chairs being flown in from all over the world just for testing! I’m horrified when I think about it now. It seems like people were just too afraid to speak up and tell me when something was excessive, and I didn’t create an environment where they felt comfortable doing so.
