OD will give Hideo Kojima a chance to realize a long-held creative vision. Kojima is a rare game developer widely recognized by both name and face – similar to a filmmaker like Christopher Nolan, his involvement instantly adds credibility and draws an audience. He’s demonstrated this ability, leveraging the reputation he earned with the Metal Gear Solid series to create distinctive and innovative games like Death Stranding.
Kojima’s next project is a horror game called *OD*, created with Xbox Game Studios. While his previous games often had scary moments, this will be his first true horror release. *OD* is planned as an anthology, meaning different creators will contribute their own horror stories within the game’s universe. Kojima’s story is inspired by his fear of knocking, and director Jordan Peele is also developing one. Perhaps most excitingly, this project lets Kojima deliver something he couldn’t ten years ago.
OD Allows Kojima to Make His First True Horror Game Following Silent Hills‘s Cancellation
Hideo Kojima’s *P.T.* is considered a masterpiece, even though it wasn’t a complete game. It was a demo—a ‘playable teaser’—intended to showcase a new *Silent Hill* title. People still talk about how terrifying it is, thanks to its realistic visuals and the way it builds suspense in a seemingly normal house. It takes that unsettling feeling of being watched and cranks it up to an extreme level.
The planned Silent Hill game under Hideo Kojima’s direction generated a lot of excitement. Despite admitting to being easily frightened, Kojima thought this sensitivity would help him create a truly exceptional horror experience. He intended to collaborate with renowned horror figures Guillermo del Toro and Junji Ito. Unfortunately, a disagreement between Kojima and Konami led to the game’s cancellation. This remains one of the most disappointing cancelled video games ever, and fans still speculate about how amazing it could have been.
It appears Hideo Kojima recognized fans were eager for another horror game, which led to the creation of *OD*. The latest trailer strongly recalls *P.T.*, featuring a realistic, everyday setting and impressive graphics. A foreboding door, similar to the one in *P.T.*, is prominently featured, and there’s mysterious text with hidden words that some fans speculate contain references to *Silent Hills*.
Okay, so the trailer is super mysterious and doesn’t really show what the gameplay will be like, but honestly, *OD* really gives me *P.T.* vibes! It feels like a spiritual successor in a lot of ways. We’re probably going to be waiting a while to find out exactly what that means, but I’m so excited to see Hideo Kojima get to make a horror game again. It’s probably not going to happen, but it’s nice to see something that reminds me of what *Silent Hills* could have been, especially considering his ongoing issues with Konami.
