I’ll Miss Ritter In Chicago Fire’s Season 14, But Daniel Kyri Just Got A Great Sendoff

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the second episode of *Chicago Fire* Season 14, titled “Primary Search.” You can watch it the day after it airs with a Peacock subscription.

The season 14 premiere of *Chicago Fire* resolved a few storylines, including Damon’s transfer, Carver’s move to Denver, and Stella’s brief pregnancy. The second episode then focused more on Ritter. Daniel Kyri was previously announced as leaving the show, but the producers brought him back for the first couple of episodes to give his character a proper farewell. I was sad to see Ritter go, but he definitely had a good sendoff.

Kyri confirmed on Instagram that the October 8 episode was also his last episode of Chicago Fire, so Ritter won’t be coming back from New York again by next week. The Truck 81 firefighter had jetted off to NYC in the Season 14 premiere after his ex, Dwayne, was shot. It was a great grand gesture, but as he told his friends back in Chicago, he also met Dwayne’s family. He was wracked by guilt, believing that the former CPD cop never would have left Chicago in the first place if he’d just agreed to moving in together.

Fortunately, that wasn’t the end of their story. Ritter and Dwayne felt they needed to talk things through, and during a long conversation, Ritter discovered Dwayne hadn’t left Chicago because of their breakup—he’d gone to New York for a job opportunity. They decided to reconcile, and this time, they agreed to not try a long-distance relationship.

Ritter decided to move to New York to be with his boyfriend, which upset Violet, who had only wanted him to talk things through with Dwayne instead of leaving Firehouse 51. He told Violet and Novak he wasn’t leaving permanently, just taking a long leave of absence, but he also confided in Mouch (who was still getting used to being a leader) that he planned to visit his uncle’s old fire station in New York City.

His departure from the show was sweet, with Violet determined to drive him to the airport with Novak to ensure he caught his flight. Everyone agreed, as they’d mentioned before, that Chicago isn’t too far from New York, and Violet and Novak plan to visit him there soon, making their farewell in “Primary Search” temporary rather than permanent.

As of now, it doesn’t look like Daniel Kyri will be back on *Chicago Fire* after his two-episode appearance at the start of Season 14. However, I expect fans will likely hear mentions of Violet and Novak visiting him sometime during the season. He received a satisfying conclusion to his story, and that leaves the door open for a possible return – which is good, considering how often the show has killed off major characters (like Otis).

The show will go on without Ritter, just as *Chicago Fire* handles departures of any character. The preview for the next episode suggests Taylor Kinney and the rest of Squad 3 are involved in a risky water rescue. Here’s a sneak peek:
