Following the huge success of the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios had a difficult decision: choosing the next big villain for its movies. They initially believed they’d found the perfect fit in Jonathan Majors, who was cast as Kang the Conqueror. Majors was a promising actor at the time, making him a strong choice to center a new *Avengersstyle film around. However, after Majors was convicted of assault and harassment, Marvel changed course and brought Robert Downey Jr. back to play Doctor Doom instead. Despite moving away from Majors a few years ago, speculation continues about a possible return for the actor.
In an interview with *The U.S. Sun*, Jonathan Majors was asked about returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While he wouldn’t confirm anything directly, he pointed to the multiverse as a possibility, suggesting there are many ways for his character to reappear. The publication noted he smiled broadly when talking about the MCU.
Could Jonathan Majors Return in Avengers: Doomsday?
It seems unlikely Jonathan Majors will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio likely wants to avoid the controversy surrounding him, and the Kang storyline wasn’t performing well even before the legal issues arose. While Majors did a great job playing different versions of Kang in *Loki*, the *Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania* movie, meant to introduce Kang the Conqueror, received mixed reviews and didn’t do well in theaters. The upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday* film aims to reignite fan excitement, and bringing back a storyline that wasn’t popular would likely hinder that goal.
Kang was a central character at the beginning of the Multiverse Saga, so completely dropping him in the upcoming *Doomsday* movie would feel strange. He was positioned to be the next big villain after Thanos, and ignoring his fate could leave audiences wondering what happened. It would be smart to resolve the Kang storyline early in *Doomsday*. One idea would be to have Doctor Doom eliminate the Kang variants we saw in the Council of Kangs, showing just how powerful Doom is.
As of now, no actor has officially been cast as Kang in the upcoming movie *Doomsday*. Marvel announced the huge cast earlier this year and promised more announcements later, but fans are still waiting. While it’s possible Jonathan Majors or another actor could have joined the project for a smaller role, given the recent issues surrounding Majors, it seems more likely they’ll recast the part. However, some actors might be hesitant to take on the role. Colman Domingo, an Oscar nominee, confirmed he spoke with Marvel about playing Kang, but ultimately decided it didn’t feel right to replace the previous actor. Others might feel the same way, particularly if Kang’s role in *Doomsday* involves being defeated and killed by Doctor Doom.
There’s talk that the first preview of *Avengers: Doomsday* will appear alongside the release of *Avatar: Fire and Ash* later this year. The trailer will likely focus on introducing Doctor Doom, but it might also be a good idea to briefly acknowledge Kang the Conqueror. This would help general audiences understand why Marvel is now focusing on a new main villain. One possibility is showing Doctor Doom defeating Kang early in the trailer, visually signaling the shift to a new antagonist.
