It sounds like something out of a suspenseful movie, but it actually happened to a programmer named Antti Leinonen. He woke up to a lot of confused emails asking him about something he hadn’t done and wasn’t sure what people were talking about.
Someone jokingly posted on Reddit that the new post-apocalyptic game, Road to Vostok, was delayed indefinitely – essentially canceling it. It turned out to be a false alarm, but it caused a lot of confusion.
The announcement felt oddly timed, especially with the game being showcased at Steam Next Fest and its demo receiving frequent updates. By the time everyone realized it wasn’t real, the rumors had already spiraled out of control.
Instead of working on his game on Thursday morning, Leinonen had to address false reports online. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the developer of Road to Vostok explained he’d released three updates in just five days to ensure the demo for Next Fest was as good as it could be. He also assured fans that development was on schedule and there was no need to worry.
The Road to Vostok Cancellation Has Been Greatly Exaggerated
It’s hard to understand why anyone would spread false rumors about a labor of love like Road to Vostok, but the resulting worry likely gave the developer some reassurance – it showed there’s real demand for a game like this.
Road to Vostok is a realistic, single-player shooter that feels familiar to fans of post-apocalyptic games. It shares similarities with titles like Escape From Tarkov, DayZ (without the zombies), and STALKER 2 (without the radiation), though it ultimately carves its own path.
Okay, so the whole game is about trying to cross this really dangerous border between Finland and Russia. You’re constantly dodging border guards and bandits, which is stressful enough! But if you actually make it to the Russian side, you get access to this area called Vostok, which is packed with awesome loot. The catch? If the military kills you there, you lose *everything* – a complete character wipe. It’s super risky, but the reward could be worth it if you’re brave enough.
The thought of struggling to survive in a bleak, empty world can be both scary and appealing, and *Road to Vostok* really emphasizes the appealing side. You can personalize and make your small shelter comfortable, and you can even get a pet cat! There are also instruments to play and help you relax by the fire, a feature we’ve also seen in *STALKER 2*.
Road to Vostok is launching soon! A demo is currently available for press, and a final demo will be released as part of the Steam Next Fest. You’ll be able to play this demo until October 31st, after which it will be taken down before the game officially enters early access.
