Action movies are consistently popular on Netflix, and the *Extraction* series is a prime example of this. The first two films have been huge successes for the streaming service, receiving positive feedback for their impressive action sequences and Chris Hemsworth’s performance as the mercenary Tyler Rake. Considering how well the *Extraction* movies have performed, it’s no surprise that a third film is being made. Hemsworth has even hinted he’s eager to reprise the role, and now fans are getting a better idea of when they can expect to see *Extraction 3*.
In an interview with Collider, Extraction director Sam Hargrave shared an update on the third film. He said they’re aiming to start filming in 2026, with a potential release sometime in 2027. However, the schedule largely depends on Chris Hemsworth’s availability with the Avengers movies, which have a complicated production timeline. Hargrave cautioned that he couldn’t officially confirm these dates, but that’s the current plan.
Why Extraction 3 May Not Release Until 2027
Look, as Chad Hargrave hinted at, Chris Hemsworth’s gotta prioritize his Marvel commitments, and that’s just how it is. We already knew he’s back as Thor in *Avengers: Doomsday*, and it sounds like they’ve mostly finished filming. But even if he *has* finished his main scenes, there’s still a chance he’ll need to be back on set. Reshoots are super common with these huge blockbusters. Plus, I heard the Russo brothers were filming *Doomsday* without a fully finished script, which means the story could still change and require him to come back for more filming. It’s not uncommon for these things to be a bit fluid!
Chris Hemsworth’s time as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe might not be over after *Avengers: Doomsday*. While the cast for the next big Marvel film, *Avengers: Secret Wars*, hasn’t been announced, Hemsworth could definitely appear in it, which is slated to begin filming next year before its 2027 release. It seems Marvel is carefully planning for Thor’s future, even going so far as to remove a potentially revealing stunt from Hemsworth’s *Limitless* series on National Geographic to protect future Thor appearances. Hemsworth is still actively discussing Thor’s storyline with Marvel after the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga.
Luckily, both the *Extraction* films and Marvel projects involve the Russo brothers (Joe and Anthony). Joe wrote the screenplays for *Extraction* and *Extraction 2*, and they both produced those movies. Their company, AGBO, is also working on the upcoming *Extraction* TV series with Omar Sy. This shared connection should help avoid conflicts when scheduling Chris Hemsworth for future projects. The Russos probably know Sam Hargrave wants to film *Extraction 3* next year, so they can work together to make sure Hemsworth is available. Hargrave may have already discussed his production plans with the Russos to coordinate everything.
Netflix is definitely moving forward with *Extraction 3*. *Extraction 2* was a huge hit, becoming the most popular Netflix film debut of 2023 and eventually landing in the top 10 most-watched movies of all time on the platform. Because of this success, Netflix is eager to start working on the third film, and plans are already underway. They’re hoping everything aligns with Marvel Studios’ schedule to keep the project on track. Given the popularity of the first two films, *Extraction 3* has the potential to be even bigger and more ambitious.
