We’re currently experiencing a peak in superhero movies and TV shows. Both Marvel and DC consistently release several highly profitable films each year, and their streaming platforms, HBO Max and Disney+, are packed with related series. It’s become hard to follow everything, as so many characters are now getting their own projects. However, it’s easy to forget this abundance is a result of past successes. The market became so crowded because, initially, there was huge demand and not enough content to satisfy it.
The world of comic book movies is changing. For a long time, studios followed a predictable formula, but that’s now being questioned, and it will likely impact the entire entertainment industry. We’re moving away from studios taking risks on new ideas and toward relying on established franchises and proven successes.
Superhero Movies Used to Be Able to Make Mountains Out of Molehills
In the early 2000s, Marvel Studios decided to build a shared universe of interconnected movies based on its popular characters. However, they faced a challenge: they didn’t own the rights to some of their most famous heroes, like Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four, all of whom had already been featured in movies. Fortunately, Marvel still had the Avengers, a well-established team from the comics. So, Kevin Feige and his team decided to launch the franchise with Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America, hoping it would be a success.
The first few phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe went smoothly, and *The Avengers* demonstrated the success of the formula. Marvel Studios continued building towards *Avengers: Endgame*, which felt like a satisfying conclusion to that era of films. Despite lacking some major characters at times, the MCU consistently delivered, unlike its competitor, the DC Extended Universe, which struggled to gain momentum even with its most famous heroes. But the landscape is shifting, and while Marvel and DC might want to spotlight lesser-known characters, that might not be feasible anymore.
Marvel & DC Aren’t Betting on the B-Team Characters Anymore
After successfully making the Guardians of the Galaxy popular at Marvel Studios, James Gunn moved to DC and promised fans that the new DC Universe would focus on telling fresh, diverse stories, regardless of which heroes were featured.
After just one year, the initial plan for DC’s TV and movie projects isn’t going as expected. One project, featuring a team called *The Authority*, seems stalled, and it’s become clear that only projects with well-known characters are getting approved. The *Wonder Woman* and *Batman* movies are progressing quickly, with James Gunn regularly sharing updates. However, shows like *Waller* and *Booster Gold* are struggling to move forward amidst constant changes, and projects like James Mangold’s *Swamp Thing* are stuck in development limbo.
Marvel Studios seems to be focusing on its most popular characters and large-scale projects. While fans are hoping for sequels to films like *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, *Eternals*, *Moon Knight*, and *She-Hulk*, those projects aren’t currently a priority. The studio is clearly prioritizing the upcoming X-Men reboot, the next two *Avengers* movies, and a *Fantastic Four* sequel, which will likely be introduced during *Avengers: Secret Wars*. It appears that these smaller, newer characters may be sidelined as Disney concentrates on its biggest franchises.
It’s unfortunate that many fantastic comic book characters likely won’t get the spotlight they deserve. They may have to wait a long time – possibly forever – for another surge in superhero popularity. Audiences have shown they prefer familiar heroes, making it difficult for new or lesser-known characters to gain traction.
