Channel 4 reveals massive streaming win as ratings reveal huge growth

BARB data shows the broadcaster’s streaming viewership increased by 36% in September compared to the previous year, marking the largest growth among major streaming services.

Viewership on the streaming platform reached a record high in September, exceeding 6 billion minutes watched. This surge was driven by popular shows like The Great British Bake Off, The Inheritance, Made in Chelsea, Celebs Go Dating, Hollyoaks, Educating Yorkshire, Taskmaster, Four in a Bed, and Married at First Sight UK.

Last September, four Channel 4 shows – Educating Yorkshire, The Great British Bake Off, Taskmaster, and Married at First Sight UK – were among the most popular with viewers aged 16-34 on streaming platforms. These shows collectively garnered over 599 million minutes of viewing time.

Channel 4 reached a record high for streaming on October 7th, with 7.7 million views across all devices.

Channel 4 continues to attract a relatively affluent and young audience compared to other commercial broadcasters. Over half of its viewers (58%) come from higher socioeconomic groups, and a significant portion (23%) are between 16 and 34 years old – making it one of the youngest streaming audiences.

Channel 4’s head of programming, Ian Katz, described the network’s recent results as a remarkably strong September.
