What James Gunn Has Said About Peacemaker’s Future

The goal is for each story to provide everything an audience needs to follow along, even if they haven’t seen previous installments. However, Gunn has also emphasized that the eighth episode of *Peacemaker* is crucial for understanding the upcoming *Man of Tomorrow* film. While watching *Peacemaker* isn’t required, watching the whole season will provide helpful background for the new Superman movie starring David Corenswet.

James Gunn has been playfully dodging questions about Season 3 of *Peacemaker*, asking fans to finish watching the second season first. However, he did confirm that he has plans for Peacemaker and Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), hinting that a project currently being developed at DC Studios will focus on the group known as the 11th Street Kids. In a recent interview with ComicBook, Gunn admitted he knows if Peacemaker will appear in future movies, but he’s not allowed to say, jokingly referencing a consequence from his co-head of DC Studios, Peter Safran. This is a roundabout way of saying ‘yes,’ though he didn’t specify which project it would be. Now that the Season 2 finale is out, we can start to piece together what all his comments mean.

How Peacemaker Season 2’s Ending Sets Up More

In Season 2 of *Peacemaker*, the team – known as the 11th Street Kids – uses money earned from taking down criminals to start Checkmate, a new security organization. Checkmate aims to protect people, operating independently from groups like ARGUS and the government. The team includes Sasha Bordeaux, Agent Fleury, Judomaster, and all the members of the 11th Street Kids. The season establishes Checkmate as an important part of the DC Universe, suggesting these characters will be back for future stories. Given their conflict with Rick Flag Sr. over the use of the Salvation planet as a metahuman prison, it’s probable they’ll also appear in *Man of Tomorrow*.

The concept of ‘Salvation’ will be central to the upcoming film, *Man of Tomorrow*. As seen in Season 2 of *Peacemaker*, Rick Flag Sr. shared Lex Luthor’s extreme views and belief that Earth would be better without metahumans. With Lex Luthor playing a key role in *Man of Tomorrow* and already collaborating with Rick Flag Sr. on the Salvation project, it’s likely this initiative will be a significant part of the movie’s storyline.

Now that *Man of Tomorrow* is finished, James Gunn could order another season of *Peacemaker* with a fresh story, now that the A.R.G.U.S. operation is closed. But given that season two focused just as much on Chris Smith as it did on the team finding their purpose, it might be better for DC Studios to create a *Checkmate* TV series. This would allow the story of *Peacemaker* to continue, but as an ensemble show – which is what season two seemed to be building towards.

Man of Tomorrow is set to be released on July 9, 2027, most likely with Peacemaker involved.
