Battlefield 6’s Betas and Playtests Intentionally Had Smaller Maps to Make Testing Easier

The recent open betas for *Battlefield 6* were a big hit, but some players felt the maps were a bit small. Design director Salim Fasahat explained to PCGamer Magazine (via GamesRadar) that this was intentional. Battlefield Studios wanted to test how the game handled large-scale battles before adding bigger maps.

Fasahat explained that the smaller maps in the *Battlefield 6* beta were intentionally designed to help the team understand how different gameplay modes function at various scales and with different map types. They learned a lot from this testing. Now that the full game is released, Fasahat says the developers are thrilled players are finally able to experience all the maps.

Christian Buhl, the technical director, noted that the smaller map sizes helped Battlefield Studios experiment more easily and refine the game’s shooting mechanics.

We began testing and refining the gunplay on the smaller maps because they’re simpler to work with. We’d always intended to launch with these maps initially, and now we’re finally adding the larger maps to BF Labs for testing.

The team making the next *Battlefield* game has been openly discussing their work and how they’re learning from past mistakes. This week, lead producer Nika Bender explained that they’re focusing on what players loved about *Battlefield 3* and *4* to make the new game great.

When we started planning our next game, we looked at previous *Battlefield* titles from a similar time period. We knew *Battlefield 3* and *4* were particularly popular with fans, so we’re building on what made those games successful, hoping players will enjoy this approach in *Battlefield 6* as well, said Bender.

According to Buhl, the impressive level of destruction in *Battlefield 6* is possible because the developers didn’t focus on older consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One. The more powerful hardware – specifically the increased memory and faster processors – in the current generation of consoles allowed them to realize their vision for the game while still maintaining good performance.

According to Buhl, the biggest improvement comes from no longer needing to support older consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One. By focusing on more powerful hardware, they’ve been able to significantly boost performance and create a better gaming experience, as they aren’t limited by the constraints of those older systems.
