In *Ghost of Yotei*, the game clearly shows you all of Atsu’s combat moves as you explore. However, mastering the game involves learning some tricks that aren’t directly explained. You’ll need to experiment and think creatively to discover these more advanced techniques.
This *Ghost of Yotei* guide offers ten helpful combat tips for players of any skill level.
Situational Weapon Selection
All five weapon types are equally capable in battle, but each one is especially effective against a particular enemy. Here they are:
- Wolf Blade Katana which is most effective against other single Katana wielders.
- Dual Katana which is most effective against Polearms such as Yari or Naginata.
- Yari which is most effective against Sickles such as Dual Katana or Kusarigama.
- Kusarigama which is most effective against Shields.
- Odachi which is most effective against Brutes.
Combatting Dual Wielders
Be ready for enemies who change weapons during a fight. Watch what they’re carrying *before* the battle starts so you can anticipate their different attacks.
Target Prioritization
When fighting many enemies with different weapons, focus on taking out those who attack from a distance first. They can damage you while staying far away. You can either eliminate them with your own ranged attacks *before* the fight starts, or quickly rush past any close-range enemies to get to them during the battle.
Crowd Control
If you’re surrounded by enemies, the Kusarigama’s sweeping attack is your best bet. Use it to stop incoming attacks, then quickly move towards any ranged attackers. After that, focus on enemies with shields – the Kusarigama is especially good against them – all while keeping the main group at bay. Once you’ve reduced their numbers, switch to weapons that are better suited for the remaining opponents.
Disarm Counter Failure
If you’re having trouble with the disarm timing, just dodge or evade instead. You have a bigger window to react – you can start dodging as soon as you see the yellow flash that signals an enemy is trying to disarm you.
Environmental Hazard Kills
Be aware of your surroundings and use them to help you win. You can quickly defeat enemies hiding in tall grass by shooting it with a Fire Arrow. If enemies are near a cliff or ledge, you can instantly eliminate them by either using a Yari Typhoon Kick or Shoulder Charging them off the edge.
Blazing Shields
Fire arrows are useful for burning away enemy shields. Once a shield is destroyed, the enemy will be vulnerable, giving you a chance to attack with your own weapon.
Winning Standoffs
Okay, so I’ve been working on my timing in standoffs, and it’s tough, right? I used to watch my opponent’s shoulders and hands, trying to read their moves, but that wasn’t working. Then I learned to focus on their back foot. Seriously, *that’s* the key. As soon as I see it move, I know it’s time to strike. It’s made a huge difference!
Rapid Arrow Type Switching
During battle, you can stay in aiming mode and quickly switch between arrow types by pressing R1, depending on what you need at the moment.
Those are some of the best tips and tricks for combat in Ghost of Yotei.
