Spider-Man is incredibly popular, so it’s not surprising there are many different versions of the character, including those from the future. One standout is Miguel O’Hara, the Spider-Man of the year 2099. He lives in a futuristic, technology-focused world controlled by a powerful and corrupt company called Alchemax, and became Spider-Man to stop them. While Miguel and the original Spider-Man share similar abilities – like super strength, wall-crawling, and web-shooting – they’re actually quite different in many ways.
Spider-Men from different timelines gained their powers in unique ways, leading to noticeable differences in how those powers work. While they share many core abilities, the specifics actually vary quite a bit. We’ll be exploring five key distinctions between the powers of the original Spider-Man and his future self from the year 2099, breaking down exactly how they differ.
5) Wall-Crawling
One of the biggest differences between these two Spider-Men is how they climb. Peter Parker can stick to almost any surface by controlling static electricity. Miguel O’Hara, however, relies on retractable claws in his hands and feet to dig into walls and ceilings.
Miguel’s powers are much more restricted than Peter’s. While Peter can make any part of his body stick to surfaces – even using this ability in surprising ways – Miguel’s claws are primarily for fighting. Peter needs to be inventive with his versatile powers, but Miguel’s are more focused and less adaptable.
4) Organic Webbing
Peter Parker doesn’t naturally produce webs like some spiders. He creates his own web fluid and shoots it from devices on his wrists. Miguel, however, has built-in web-spinners in his forearms that create webs organically. This means Miguel doesn’t have to worry about running out of web fluid or his equipment breaking, though creating webs does require energy, and the resulting webs are just as strong as natural spider silk.
Peter needs to create his own web fluid, so he can run low or lose it. However, he can also use a lot of fluid at once to create large, explosive webs, and he’s able to change the formula to make it stronger and more adaptable.
3) Spider-Sense
Spider-Man’s ‘spider-sense’ is one of his most famous abilities – it warns him of incoming danger, whether it’s a physical attack or even a deception. It’s so sensitive it can even detect things like tracking devices. Interestingly, Miguel O’Hara, another Spider-Man, doesn’t have this power. While Peter Parker reacts instinctively to threats he doesn’t see, Miguel has to depend on his intelligence and regular senses to stay safe.
Peter’s Spider-Sense isn’t always helpful; it can even be used against him. For example, when he absorbed a lot of radiation, his Spider-Sense went into overdrive, mistakenly identifying his own body as the threat. As shown in *The Amazing Spider-Man* #76 (2018), this caused a constant and agonizing loop of warnings. Essentially, the Spider-Sense can be overwhelmed, and when that happens, it feels like an incredibly painful allergic reaction.
2) Enhanced Vision
Peter initially needed glasses, but his vision improved to be nearly perfect. However, Miguel’s eyesight is far superior. He can see things at a distance like a telescope, clearly in the dark, and even detect energy that’s invisible to others. He can spot dangers from incredibly far away – up to a mile, in fact – and see just as well in complete darkness as he does during the day.
He sees things with incredible clarity and speed, noticing even the quickest movements that most people would miss. While he doesn’t have a sixth sense, he can instantly spot and respond to anything within his view.
1) Radioactivity
Both Peter and Miguel gained spider-like abilities from spiders, but the way they got their powers differs significantly. Peter was bitten by a radioactive spider, which gave him a strong resistance to radiation – a huge advantage that has helped him survive radioactive attacks and even use radiation to boost his powers, like when he fought Morlun. Miguel, on the other hand, had his DNA combined with spider DNA and doesn’t share this natural resistance. This means Peter has a lot more options when facing radioactive threats, while Miguel is much more vulnerable.
