I’ve been watching what’s happening with Shonen Jump+, the digital manga platform from Shueisha that launched in 2014. While it’s home to some huge hits like *Dandadan*, *Kaiju No. 8*, and *Spy x Family*, it also cancels a lot of series. It seems like every year, many new manga start, but just as many get cut after about a year if they don’t gain enough readers. Recently, it was announced that Shiro Moriya’s sci-fi manga, *Astro Baby*, will end with its 43rd chapter on October 24th, 2025 – it’s just the latest in what’s been a pretty significant wave of cancellations this year.
I was really excited when this series first came out! The artwork was amazing, and the story had so much promise. But honestly, it felt like things got rushed towards the end, and it didn’t quite deliver on that initial potential. Sadly, the creator, Moriya, has been dealing with some health issues, which led to an unexpected break back in September. It’s a shame, because Moriya also created *Soloist in a Cage* back in 2018 – it was fantastic and got a lot of love! But that one also had to go on hiatus due to health problems and ended up finishing rather abruptly. Both series are available on Manga Plus, and even with the issues, I’d still recommend checking them out – the art is beautiful and the stories are really unique.
What Is the Plot of Astro Baby?

The story unfolds in North Hill, a secluded town on a distant peninsula. When a meteorite landed nearby, it unleashed a strange illness called Couper, turning the town’s residents into cannibals. A young boy, Billy, saw the horrifying events and tried to convince the authorities that those committing the murders were covered in a black, otherworldly substance before losing control.
Only Eleanor, a young professor working with Dr. Beck Alens – a researcher and victim of the disease who studied the beginnings of life through earth science – believed Billy. Six years later, the town was quarantined to contain the spread of the illness. Now a soldier, Billy requested a posting back home, despite the risks, hoping to reconnect with Eleanor and help her raise her child, as her ex-husband is no longer in the picture.
Just when Billy welcomed his new baby, another meteorite unexpectedly crashed nearby. He desperately tried to shield the child from Eleanor, who was quickly becoming ill with a mysterious disease. To everyone’s surprise, the baby could already talk and even swore to protect Billy, mirroring the help Billy had once given him. Now, in a dangerous and unpredictable world, Billy is determined to uncover the source of the illness and understand the extraordinary abilities of Eleanor’s newborn.
