It’s been four years since the last major Battlefield game, and it wasn’t very well received. But today, that’s changed with the exciting release of Battlefield 6 on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5. The new first-person shooter from Electronic Arts (EA) was predicted to be a huge hit and one of the biggest games of 2025, and early signs show it’s exceeding expectations.
Battlefield 6 quickly became incredibly popular after its release on Friday, reaching a peak of over 747,000 players on Steam. This makes it the 14th most-played game ever on the platform, surpassing games like Goose Goose Duck and falling just behind Baldur’s Gate 3.
Currently, the game has about 600,000 players online at the same time, but that number is likely to increase over the weekend as more people have time to play after work.
Many people expect Battlefield 6 to quickly reach over a million players, surpassing the popular game Elden Ring and becoming one of the top ten most-played games on Steam. This would be a significant success and demonstrate a strong revival for the Battlefield franchise.
Following the successful launch of the latest Battlefield game, Vince Zampella – who leads the teams at Respawn Entertainment, Ripple Effect Studios, and the entire Battlefield franchise – shared a message on social media. He thanked the developers for their dedication and the Battlefield community for their ongoing, honest feedback.
I want to quickly congratulate the amazing teams who created BF6. It’s been an incredible few years working on this game, and they’ve put so much effort into it. I’m thrilled we can finally share their hard work with everyone, and this is just the beginning – there’s more to come!
We also want to thank the Battlefield players! Your feedback has been incredibly helpful as we’ve developed a game we’re all excited about. Please keep sharing your thoughts – this is just the beginning, with new content coming in future seasons, starting with Season 1 on October 28th, as Zampella explained.
The community’s feedback was crucial in guiding EA and DICE to create a more classic Battlefield experience with the next installment, moving away from the changes that proved unpopular in Battlefield 2042.
Community feedback was crucial in guiding EA and DICE to create a more classic Battlefield experience with Battlefield 6. They moved away from the changes made in Battlefield 2042 – like replacing traditional classes with customizable ‘Specialists’ and lessening the amount of environmental destruction – after players expressed their concerns.
Battlefield 6 is bringing back character classes, each with unique gadgets that can really change how a match plays out. It also features the most detailed map destruction the series has ever seen, plus a bunch of different maps and game types. A cool feature called Portal lets players create and share their own custom game modes, similar to how it works in Halo Forge.

As a researcher following the game’s launch, it’s been exciting to see the positive reception to the latest Battlefield title. Reviews have been overwhelmingly favorable – we’re seeing an 84/100 on Metacritic, which puts it in ‘Generally Favorable’ territory. And the community seems to agree, with Steam user reviews currently at ‘Mostly Positive,’ where around 76% of players have given it a thumbs up. It feels like a return to what fans loved about the series is really paying off.
The game’s user review score is likely to improve over time. Many of the current negative reviews stem from bugs and problems players experienced when the game first launched. DICE is actively fixing these issues and maintaining the game’s servers, and the remaining problems are under investigation, so we expect scores to rise as things are resolved.
As a longtime Battlefield fan, it’s fantastic to see Battlefield 6 launch so successfully – but honestly, it wasn’t unexpected.
As a longtime Battlefield fan, I’m thrilled to see Battlefield 6 have such a strong launch. Honestly, it wasn’t a surprise though – when the open beta in August attracted over 500,000 players and even beat a Call of Duty record, I knew this game would be a massive success.
This game could be so good it rivals Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. However, as my colleague and I previously discussed, it’s unlikely to win over dedicated Call of Duty players who enjoy that game’s quick, action-packed, and fluid movement.
I’m really excited to start playing Battlefield 6 this weekend, and you can join me for $69.99 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, or PlayStation 5. There’s also a more expensive ‘Phantom Edition’ for $100 that includes exclusive items, the first season’s Battle Pass, and other bonuses. If you’re on Xbox, you can currently find it on sale for $89.99 at Loaded (formerly CDKeys).

I like to stay updated on all things Windows, so I follow Windows Central on Google News. It’s a great way to have their newest stories, helpful tips, and interesting features show up right in my news feed!
