One Piece Already Revealed Shanks’ True Goal, But Fans Missed It

Just a heads-up: if you’re not caught up with the *One Piece* manga, this might spoil some things! I’ve been watching *One Piece* for a long time, and Shanks remains one of my favorite characters, even after all these years. He’s been around since the very beginning, and he really kicked off the whole story. It was his encounter with Luffy that made Luffy want to become a pirate in the first place, and Luffy even got his Devil Fruit powers because of him – powers that turned out to be surprisingly quirky! Despite being so important to the plot, Shanks doesn’t appear often, but whenever he does, it’s always a big moment.

I’ve noticed fans are really anticipating seeing this character unleash his full power – he’s built up as one of the strongest in the series! So far, we’ve only seen hints of what he’s capable of, and his Haki seems to be the most powerful anyone has displayed in this generation. It’s not just him either; his crew is full of incredibly strong individuals who I think will play a huge role as the story heads towards its conclusion. The series has been gradually revealing the secrets surrounding this character and what he’s really after, but I recently learned that a key scene’s true meaning was actually lost when it was translated.

Shanks’ Goal Has Always Been the One Piece, But There’s More to It Than Meets the Eye

The treasure hidden by Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King, after his journey to Laughtale, remains a central mystery in the story. This treasure sparked the Great Pirate Era, inspiring countless people to set sail in search of it. Like many others, Shanks—who looked up to Roger as a father figure—is also after the legendary treasure. In chapter 1054, released after the Wano arc, Shanks surprised fans by telling Benn Beckman that the time had come to claim the *One Piece*.

According to Japanese translator @DawnStussy, Shanks’ words in Chapter 1054 have a different meaning than many believe. He actually said, “Let’s go take it – the One Piece.” Stussy points out that the Japanese character used for ‘take’ implies Shanks intends to *steal* the One Piece, suggesting he knows who rightfully owns it and is planning to take it from them.

Because the manga is translated into many languages, some of the original meaning gets lost in translation, especially the subtle details and hidden layers. While the character’s motivations are still a mystery, we know his quest for the treasure isn’t about simple adventure – there’s a much more complex reason driving him that we haven’t discovered yet.

One Piece Is Slowly Unraveling the Mysteries Surrounding Shanks

Before the recent events in the story, Shanks didn’t seem interested in finding the legendary treasure. However, after seeing Luffy’s powerful new Gear 5 transformation on his bounty poster, he probably realized the world was about to change drastically. While the extent of Shanks’ knowledge about the treasure, Luffy’s Devil Fruit, and the world remains a mystery, it’s clear he’s hiding something. A pivotal moment before Roger’s execution deeply impacted Shanks’ life and altered his path. We’ve learned that Shanks wasn’t driven by a desire for the treasure itself, but still wanted the freedom of being a pirate. Now, the story is gradually revealing more about his past and the full extent of his abilities.

Shanks comes from the Figarland family, a noble lineage that serves Imu as Holy Knights. His father, Saint Figarland, is now a member of the Five Elders and leads all the Holy Knights, while his twin brother, Shamrock, is a commander. Shanks is aware of his family’s status but chose not to rejoin them. In a past memory, Gaban called Shanks the ‘Child of Fate,’ hinting at a possible prophecy surrounding him. While Shanks hasn’t yet appeared in the Elbaf arc, it’s already revealing details about his past, including the circumstances of his mother’s death during the God Valley Incident. With the story entering its final stages, we’ll probably learn more about Shanks’s motivations very soon.
